Tony MacAlpine - Tony Macalpine

Tony MacAlpine – Tony Macalpine

$14.74

Personnel: Tony MacAlpine (guitar, keyboards, programming).Audio Mixer: Ulrich Wild.Recording information: The Cottage, Pasadena, CA; The Wilderness.Photographer: Alex Solca.Tony MacAlpine's self-titled tenth solo album is his first such effort in a decade, that is, since 2001's Chromaticity. Of course, he's hardly been idle in that period, playing and recording with the power trio CAB and playing in Steve Vai's touring band, among other activities. But that he has returned to solo work and given this disc simply his own name indicates a re-dedication to his career as a frontman. Nevertheless, his extensive work in groups has had an impact. Here, bassist Philip Bynoe and drummer Virgil Donati make like they are a heavy metal rhythm section for the most part, and MacAlpine takes off for the stratosphere, rampaging through soaring riffs at high speed. But he doesn't leave his bandmates behind, always staying within the arrangements rather than just showboating. Back in his earlier solo days, he had finally taken to the microphone for some singing, but this is an all-instrumental effort. As in the past, however, he gives over some time to his keyboard abilities, notably plinking through some jazzy piano playing halfway through "10 Seconds to Mercury" and overdubbing himself in the minor-key piano and acoustic guitar duet that is "Flowers for Monday." He also leaves room for his classical tendencies, although this time, instead of sitting down to play a Chopin piece on piano, he instead comes up with an electric guitar arrangement for Schumann's "The Dedication" to end the album. It brings out another of his major influences for, if most would consider him in the Vai/Joe Satriani school of guitar shredders, his pop/classical tendencies suggest Queen's Brian May. ~ William Ruhlmann

Tony Rice - Tony Rice

Tony Rice – Tony Rice

$14.55

This eponymous release was the first of Tony Rice's many albums for the Rounder label, and hardcore bluegrass fans will probably consider it his best. Joined by an impressive roster of sidemen representing both the old and new schools of bluegrass playing (including David Grisman, J.D. Crowe, Jerry Douglas, and Darol Anger), Rice runs through a program consisting primarily of bluegrass standards but also including a number of forward-thinking modern compositions, such as David Nichtern's "Plastic Banana" and Grisman's swinging "Rattlesnake." This album is one of the early landmarks in the development of what came to be called new acoustic music, an instrumental genre that drew almost equally on bluegrass, jazz, and classical traditions and came to be championed by Rice, Grisman, Anger, and a few others in their circle. But as Rice's warm singing on "Hills of Roane County" and "Banks of the Ohio" and his fiery flatpicking on "Big Mon" and "Farewell Blues" attest, this is also a very fine straight bluegrass album. It's difficult to pick out highlights, but the joyful "Eighth of January" and the wonderful twin fiddle arrangement on "Big Mon" are both definite showstoppers. ~ Rick Anderson

Lama Gyurme - The Lama's Chant

Lama Gyurme – The Lama's Chant

$17.8

Personnel: Lama Gyurme (vocals); Lama Gyurme; Jean-Philippe Rykiel, Loy Ehrlich (keyboards).Audio Mixer: Charles Vander Elst.Audio Remasterer: Michel Geiss.Recording information: FMR Studio, Paris, France.Editor: Alexis Mauri.Arranger: Jean-Philippe Rykiel. In 1994, a recording of Bhutanese lama Gyurme and French keyboard player Jean-Philippe Rykiel circulated as one of the early contenders in a religious chant genre that would later encompass the popularity of the Benedictine Monks and others. The Lama's Chants/Songs of Awakening never hit as big in America as others later would, but it sold marvelously across Europe. Marking a decade since the original, Narada released a remastered version with an additional disc of live material, culled from concerts surrounding both the Songs of Awakening album and the later Rain of Blessings album. The tone remains ethereal throughout, with the solitary monk laying out a vocal texture that is doubled by the appropriately ambient tone of the keyboards. Very new age. While the compositions are surprisingly sparse (and, of course, don't contain any of Rykiel's usual Thelonious Monk inspiration), the finished product isn't too bad, even for those not attuned to the new age realm. The chants can get a bit repetitive, as chants are wont to do, but then again the point of listening to chant isn't for compositional complexity but for the mood and ambience the music inspires. The live recordings are a nice bonus for those who have already picked up the original version, but the album stands well both for newcomers and those acquainted with the style. ~ Adam Greenberg

The Search for the Panchen Lama (Paperback)

The Search for the Panchen Lama (Paperback)

$19

In May 1995, a seven-year-old Tibetan boy and his family were taken from their home by Chinese security forces. They have not been seen since. The boy's devotees believe him to be the eleventh incarnation of the Panchen Lama, the second most important incarnation in the Tibetan Buddhist hierarchy. Isabel Hilton tells the gripping inside story of how this child became the pawn in a battle between the Chinese regime and Tibet's exiled religious leader, the Dalai Lama. In revealing the political intrigue that accompanied the race to choose and enthrone the eleventh Panchen Lama, Hilton "clarifies a great deal about the nature of Tibetan culture and history and the complexities of Tibet's relationship with China" (New York Times). "Lively and vastly entertaining…. Hilton has seen—and participated in—one of the final moments of a lost Tibet."—Boston Sunday Globe "Riveting ….captures the panoramic scope of a remarkable story…. The ending is heartbreaking."—Los Angeles Times "[A]n outstanding book, well-researched, lively, scholarly, humorous, sympathetic, and eminently readable."—The Tablet "[A]n important book, a work of impeccable scholarship, erudition and great personal courage."—Literary Review "[A] crash course in Tibetan history and affairs in addition to a rattling good story."—The Spectator "Hilton's excellent new book is a cool and intelligent explanation of the political intricacies surrounding the Panchen Lama."—The Observer
