In 1937, a group of Tibetan monks searched for a young boy who was the reborn soul of the Dalai Lama, their nation’s spiritual and political leader. After the monks found the boy living in a small cottage, he moved to a mountain palace and became the fourteenth Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama lived as a monk, meditating and praying, advocating love and peace. After China tried to invade Tibet, the Dalai Lama had to escape his homeland and go to India, where he would spend many years working to free Tibet from Chinese control. Learn the story of one of the world’s most important spiritual leaders and peace activists in Dalai Lama: Spiritual Leader of Tibet.

An amazing, often overlooked story of the man who brought Yoga and Tibetan culture to America. Theos Bernard’s colorful, enigmatic, and sometimes contradictory life captures an intersection of East and West that changed our world. After years of forcibly stopping foreigners at the borders, the leaders of Tibet opened the doors to their kingdom in 1937 for Theos Bernard. He was the third American to set foot in Tibet and the first American ever initiated into Tantric practices by the highest lama in Tibet. When Bernard left that sacred land, he was sent home with fifty mule loads of priceless, essential Buddhist scriptures from government and monastery vaults. Bernard brought these writings to America, where he achieved celebrity as a spiritual master. Appearing four times on the cover of the largest-circulation magazine of the day, befriending some of the most famous figures of his era, including Charles Lindbergh, Lowell Thomas, Ganna Walska, and W. Y. Evans-Wentz, and working with legendary editor Maxwell Perkins, the charismatic and controversial White Lama introduced a new vision of life and spiritual path to American culture before mysteriously disappearing in the Himalayas in 1947. Biography, travel and adventure, a history of Tibet’s opening to the West, and the story of Buddhism and Yoga’s arrival in America, White Lama: The Life of Tantric Yogi Theos Bernard, Tibet’s Lost Emissary to the West is the first work to tell his groundbreaking story in full and is a narrative that thrills from beginning to end. Includes 15photographsshot in Tibet in 1937 by Theos Bernard, part of a collection thathas beendescribed as the best photographic record of Tibet in existence. From the Hardcover edition.

Tony MacAlpine - Tony Macalpine

Tony MacAlpine – Tony Macalpine

$14.14

Personnel: Tony MacAlpine (guitar, keyboards, programming). Audio Mixer: Ulrich Wild. Recording information: The Cottage, Pasadena, CA; The Wilderness. Photographer: Alex Solca. Tony MacAlpine's self-titled tenth solo album is his first such effort in a decade, that is, since 2001's Chromaticity. Of course, he's hardly been idle in that period, playing and recording with the power trio CAB and playing in Steve Vai's touring band, among other activities. But that he has returned to solo work and given this disc simply his own name indicates a re-dedication to his career as a frontman. Nevertheless, his extensive work in groups has had an impact. Here, bassist Philip Bynoe and drummer Virgil Donati make like they are a heavy metal rhythm section for the most part, and MacAlpine takes off for the stratosphere, rampaging through soaring riffs at high speed. But he doesn't leave his bandmates behind, always staying within the arrangements rather than just showboating. Back in his earlier solo days, he had finally taken to the microphone for some singing, but this is an all-instrumental effort. As in the past, however, he gives over some time to his keyboard abilities, notably plinking through some jazzy piano playing halfway through "10 Seconds to Mercury" and overdubbing himself in the minor-key piano and acoustic guitar duet that is "Flowers for Monday." He also leaves room for his classical tendencies, although this time, instead of sitting down to play a Chopin piece on piano, he instead comes up with an electric guitar arrangement for Schumann's "The Dedication" to end the album. It brings out another of his major influences for, if most would consider him in the Vai/Joe Satriani school of guitar shredders, his pop/classical tendencies suggest Queen's Brian May. ~ William Ruhlmann

Reviewed by Mike Rimmer From the opening bass driven 'Must Be The Season', you know this album is not going to take prisoners. With the production team of Brent Bourgouis and Charlie Peacock, you also know that you don't have to ask too many questions about the quality of the music. The finger of Bourgouis is very evident and some of these songs could have fitted very snugly into his recent solo album without sounding out of place. Mike Roe from the 77s contributes the breathtakingly beautiful 'Holiday' which takes the listener from the striving of trying to earn salvation to the rest which God's grace brings. The intro to 'High' made me think of the Beatles (circa Sgt Pepper?), 'Shake The Money Tree' is a Gabrielesque groover – all low ethnic sounds and rhythms and 'Out Of My Hands' is pop perfection. As with Peacock's best work, Vincent combines artistry and spirituality. This is how Christian music should be, music which surprises the ear and words that touch and challenge the soul. On the sleeve, Tony writes, 'My goal…is to create music in an innovative and professional way…presenting Jesus Christ as a real and passionately loving God, whose grace is for everyone.' He succeeded!

Tony Bennett - Young Tony

Tony Bennett – Young Tony

$23.44

Twenty-three-year-old Tony Bennett recorded and released his first single for Columbia Records, "The Boulevard of Broken Dreams" (with its B-side, "I Wanna Be Loved"), in April 1950. From then until the end of 1956, he recorded 87 tracks released contemporaneously on 35 Columbia singles and two LPs, Cloud 7 (February 7, 1955) and Tony (January 14, 1957), not counting compilations. On January 1, 2007, Bennett's 1956 recordings joined those from previous years in entering the public domain in Europe, where copyright extends only 50 years. The British label Proper Records took advantage of that to release Young Tony, a four-CD box set largely devoted to Bennett's 1950-1956 recordings, containing 82 selections with a running time of about three hours and 54 minutes, a length that might have been contained (though just barely) on three discs. The collection, arranged chronologically by recording date, includes all of Bennett's Columbia recordings from April 17, 1950, to September 24, 1954, except "Let's Make Love," from that first recording session. But having featured nearly all of Bennett's first 26 singles, the set then excludes most of his 45s from 1955 and 1956, employing only the A-side of the last of them, "Just in Time," the song from the Broadway musical Bells Are Ringing that reached number 46 in the Billboard singles chart. That means other chart entries "Can You Find It in Your Heart," "From the Candy Store on the Corner to the Chapel on the Hill," "Happiness Street (Corner Sunshine Square)," and "The Autumn Waltz" are missing. All the tracks from Cloud 7 and Tony are included, however, as are three tracks, "While the Music Plays On," "Darn That Dream," and "I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me," that were recorded in 1954 but not issued until years later. Proper concludes the set by adding in some non-Columbia material: a low-fidelity version of "In the Middle of an Island" (a Bennett hit in 1957) with special lyrics sung on television on The Nat King Cole Show in December 1956 and the contents of the frequently licensed Roulette Records LP Strike Up the Band, a collaboration with Count Basie & His Orchestra recorded in November 1958. The chronological formatting and the elimination of the mid-'50s singles emphasizes Bennett's musical development during his late twenties. He begins bellowing in a sub-operatic tone on his early records and bowing to producer Mitch Miller's taste for novelty material, working largely with arranger/conductor Percy Faith. While this approach produces hits ("Because of You," "Cold, Cold Heart") and occasional artistic triumphs, such as the big-band swing version of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," there is also plenty of mediocrity. But by the middle of the third disc, as Bennett records tracks for Cloud 7 in August 1954 using only three horns and a rhythm section and covering standards, he has begun to sound like the mature Tony Bennett more familiar to later listeners. He can still rev up to…

$15.16

Personnel: Tony Rice (vocals, guitar); David Grisman, Larry Rice (tenor, mandolin, background vocals); J.D. Crowe (baritone, banjo, background vocals); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Darol Anger, Richard Greene (violin). Audio Mixers: Tony Rice; Bob Shumaker . Liner Note Author: Philip Elwood. Recording information: 1750 Arch, Berkeley, CA (07/1976). Photographer: Robert Schliefer. This eponymous release was the first of Tony Rice's many albums for the Rounder label, and hardcore bluegrass fans will probably consider it his best. Joined by an impressive roster of sidemen representing both the old and new schools of bluegrass playing (including David Grisman, J.D. Crowe, Jerry Douglas, and Darol Anger), Rice runs through a program consisting primarily of bluegrass standards but also including a number of forward-thinking modern compositions, such as David Nichtern's "Plastic Banana" and Grisman's swinging "Rattlesnake." This album is one of the early landmarks in the development of what came to be called new acoustic music, an instrumental genre that drew almost equally on bluegrass, jazz, and classical traditions and came to be championed by Rice, Grisman, Anger, and a few others in their circle. But as Rice's warm singing on "Hills of Roane County" and "Banks of the Ohio" and his fiery flatpicking on "Big Mon" and "Farewell Blues" attest, this is also a very fine straight bluegrass album. It's difficult to pick out highlights, but the joyful "Eighth of January" and the wonderful twin fiddle arrangement on "Big Mon" are both definite showstoppers. ~ Rick Anderson

Tony Abbott

Tony Abbott

$20.99

If he’s elected as our PM in the future I would be very scared for women everywhere.’ Mia Freedman When Julia Gillard a woman who was unmarried and childless, and an atheist became prime minister in 2010, Tony Abbott was left boiling with rage. Not only had he lost, but he had been defeated by a modern woman. For the time being, the ambitions of this fundamentalist Catholic and fiercely combative reactionary politician had been thwarted. Tony Abbott, a former pugilist and would-be priest, has dedicated his public life to the prosecution of his deeply traditional values. A favoured son in his own family, and raised in a cloistered world of male institutions, he has always been drawn to powerful mentors from his own caste priests, zealots, and father figures. Perhaps this is why so many voters, especially women, dislike him: they sense in Abbott’s default aggressiveness and lack of balance a man not attuned to their centre-of-the-road, secular interests. In this blistering critique, Susan Mitchell explores how Australia’s would-be prime minister became the man he is today. He is at war, not just with the government, but in an unrelenting battle for the hearts and minds of the Australian people. There is still time, he believes, to achieve the position that his male mentors think he is destined to hold that of leading the country back to the proper order of things’. But is he the prime minister-in-waiting that the country has to have or does he pose an unacceptable threat to his own party and to the nation?

Tony Benn has been portrayed as both hero and villain, as a creative and as a destructive force. This comprehensively revised edition of Jad Adams’s classic biography, is written with unparalleled access to Benn’s private records, and describes the long and turbulent career of one of the most charismatic politicians of the last hundred years. The first biography to have been written with full access to the Benn archives chronicles the behind-the-scenes story of Benn’s bitter battles with every leader of the Labour Party since Gaitskell. It details his service in the governments of Wilson and Callaghan, his role as a champion of the left during the Labour Party’s long period in opposition, his retirement from Parliament, to spend more time involved in politics in 2001, and his subsequent emergence as a leading figure of the British opposition to the war in Iraq.

Tony Lazzeri

Tony Lazzeri

$29.95

Baseball player Tony Lazzeri was the first great Italian-American sports superstar. He was known for his excellent glove, strong throwing arm and good speed, as well as his honesty, integrity and support of his teammates. This member of the 1927 Murderers' Row of the New York Yankees batted sixth behind Earl Combs, Mark Koenig, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Bob Meusel. The major league's first power-hitting second baseman, he batted over .300 five times and drove in over 100 runs in seven seasons. He was the Yankees regular second baseman for twelve consecutive seasons and helped them win six pennants and five world championships. Chosen to play in the first All-Star Game in 1933, he made the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. Researched from primary sources as well as interviews with his peers, this biography covers Lazzeri's life from his birth in San Francisco to Italian immigrants; his harsh, poverty-stricken childhood, and struggles with epilepsy (though he never suffered an attack while playing baseball); through every moment of his impressive career (as well as the time he struck out against Grover Cleveland Alexander in Game Seven of the 1926 World Series); ending with his death at age 42 of a heart attack. Lazzeri's batting record is included as an appendix and the work is illustrated with both private and public photographs.

Tony Greig

Tony Greig

$9.99

Tony Greig was a fearless cricketer, a born entertainer, a stalwart friend and a loving son and father. His death in December 2012 was met with an outpouring of grief from family, friends, colleagues and fans. In this wonderful memoir, Tony’s life is recounted by two of those who knew him best – his mother, Joycie, and his eldest son, Mark. Tony’s story began in his beloved South Africa when Joycie embarked on an extraordinary war-time love affair with a man not her husband, Sandy Greig. From schoolboy cricketing prodigy, to his early days playing for English country side Sussex, Tony travelled the world meeting an array of cricket greats. He was eventually made captain of England, but then was removed from the job when he controversially threw in his lot with Kerry Packer and his World Series Cricket in 1977. Together, Tony and Packer changed the game forever and formed a friendship that lasted 28 years until Packer’s death in 2005. With Packer’s offer of a ‘job for life’, Tony joined the Nine Network as a commentator and settled his family in Australia. From behind the mic, Tony became part of the fabric of the Australian summer. His knowledge of the game, his respect for players from all countries, but particularly for those from the Subcontinent, his humour and above all his passion for cricket made him one of the game’s best loved and best known figures. This rich and fascinating life has been retold with warmth and love, giving us an unforgettable portrait of a great man.

Almost unknown when in 1945 he purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its famous race, the Indianapolis 500, Tony Hulman soon became a household name in auto racing circles. He is credited with not only saving the Indianapolis Motor Speedway–shuttered during World War II–from becoming a residential housing development but also with re-invigorating auto racing in the United States. Until his purchase of the Speedway, Hulman had not been involved in auto racing; he was the CEO of Hulman & Company, a wholesale grocer. An astute businessman, Hulman made Clabber Girl Baking Powder a national brand. With the rise of the chain grocery stores, such as Kroger, the wholesale grocery industry was slowly consolidating. Hulman successfully led the reorientation of the family fortunes to include a range of businesses including a beer company, a Coca-Cola franchise, a broadcast empire, and real estate and gas companies. The book traces the rise of Hulman & Company from a small wholesale grocer in Terre Haute to a dominate regional business, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indianapolis 500 races during Hulman's tenure, and his other major investments as well as his philanthropy, particularly to higher education in Terre Haute.

Tony Garnett is the first book-length study of one of the most respected and prolific producers working in British television. From ground-breaking dramas from the 1960s such as Up the Junction and Cathy Come Home to the ‘must see’ series in the 1990s and 2000s such as This Life and The Cops , Garnett has produced some of the most important and influential British television drama. This book charts Garnett’s career from his early days as an actor to his position as executive producer and head of World Productions. Drawing on personal interviews, archival research, contextual analysis and selected case studies, Tony Garnett examines the ways in which Garnett has helped to define the role of the producer in British television drama. Arguing that Garnett was both a key creative and political influence on the work he produced and an enabler of the work of others, the book traces his often combative relationships with broadcasting institutions (especially the BBC). Additionally, the study discusses the films he made for the cinema and considers some of the ways in which Garnett’s experiments in film technology, 16 mm in the 1960s, digital video in the 1990s, have shaped his creative output.Tony Garnett will be of interest to all levels of researchers and students of British television drama, media and film.

The Lawudo Lama

The Lawudo Lama

$15.99

The Lawudo Lama presents two life stories along with an extended introduction laying out their social and cultural context. It takes place in the Mount Everest region of Nepal, the home of the famous Sherpa guides, where the people practice Tibetan Buddhism and revere the local lamas and yogis. The stories are centered in Lawudo, a small village in the Khumbu region, and the central figure is the renowned Lawudo Lama. The first Lawudo Lama portrayed, Lama Kunzang Yeshe (1864-1946), was a yogi of the Nyingma lineage who spent much of his life meditating in a cave near Lawudo, and his life is reconstructed through meticulous research of written and oral histories. The second story is of Kunzang Yeshe’s reincarnation, a monk of the Gelug lineage known as Lama Zopa Rinpoche, whose story is given in a first-person narrative. Lama Zopa is well known in the West as the author of several books and as the Spritual Director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), which has more than 100 affiliate Buddhist centers worldwide. Lama Zopa Rinpoche travels and teaches extensively to large audiences and has thousands of students. The Lawudo Lama will appeal to travelers to Nepal, to Buddhist practitioners, and to scholars trying to understand the culture of the region. It is well documented, and is accompanied by more than 125 color and black and white photos, drawings, lineage charts, and maps.

The Dalai Lama (Paperback)

The Dalai Lama (Paperback)

$11.74

In 1937, a vision led the high lamas of Tibet to an old house in the mountains, with a turquoise roof. Here lived 2-year-old Lhamo Dhondrub, who would go on to become the 14th Dalai Lama. But how did this toddler grow into one of the world's most important religious figures? And why has he been forced into exile? The Dalai Lama looks at his extraordinary story, from his education by monks, deep in the Tibetan mountains, to how he became leader of Tibet aged just 15. The Chinese invasion of Tibet, that forced him to flee his homeland, and begin a new life and government in exile in India, is explained, as is the plight of ordinary Tibetans. The Buddhist faith, and exactly what it means to be a Buddhist, is explored, as is the role it plays in the lives of people around the world. The book also looks at the Dalai Lama's work as a teacher and a leader, and at some of the issues he campaigns for – particularly his environmental activism, and his work to promote religious cooperation and interfaith dialogue.

Adapter: Daniela Boifava. Liner Note Author: Michel Tyabji. Photographers: Yoshimi Hashimoto; Bernie Walters; Brant Brogan; James Blocks; Robert Tyabji; Adil Tyabji. Dalai Lama Renaissance is the soundtrack to the award-winning film directed by Khashyar Darvich and narrated by Harrison Ford. The film focuses on a working retreat hosted by His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama during which he invited 40 pivotal Western thinkers to discuss and try to come up with the solutions for problems confronting the modern world. Over 140 hours of video footage were distilled into an 80-minute film. The soundtrack features prayers and chants by Tibetan Buddhist monks, and narration by Ford. As a disc for simply listening, it works just fine, but heard in the context of seeing the film, it is delightful. ~ Thom Jurek

Understanding the Dalai Lama

Understanding the Dalai Lama

$24.95

His Holiness The Dalai Lama, the remarkable exiled spiritual and temporal head of Tibet, is a statesman for our troubled times. This collection of 11 essays by scholars, writers, theologians, and others whose lives he has touched represents a broad spectrum of perspectives on this Nobel Peace Prize recipient who is also a living Buddha to six million followers. Included among the contributions are personal reflections by those who have been privileged to get to know His Holiness, as well as illuminating introductions to some of his core beliefs. Editor Rajiv Mehrotra, who contributes the book’s first essay, says of the Dalai Lama, “As with all truly great and inspiring leaders, his life is his message and philosophy.” The essays in this volume shed light on that fascinating life . . . painting the portrait of a tireless champion of compassion, altruism, and peace who is both deeply spiritual and disarmingly human.

Dear Lama Zopa

Dear Lama Zopa

$12.99

Unconventional wisdom, affirmation, and advice from one of Tibetan Buddhism’s most influential living teachers. Lama Zopa Rinpoche is a master at explaining Buddhism’s radical but effective methods for transforming suffering into happiness, which have been practiced and taught by Tibetans for a thousand years. It’s a challenging way to think – how can it be that the things that cause us pain are actually blessings? In Dear Lama Zopa , Rinpoche applies that challenge to our everyday, real-life problems – from the littlest to the biggest. Every year he receives thousands of letters from people around the world asking for advice – on coping with everything from addiction, grief, and depression, to war, terrorism, and death. In his detailed and deeply caring responses to these letters, reproduced here, Rinpoche shows again and again that the best method for solving our problems is to radically change the way we perceive them; that by emphasizing their inner causes we can even change the resulting outer circumstances. Even people familiar with notions like karma and reincarnation, which imply that we are the creators of our own experiences, may find the advice difficult. Yet uncountable thousands of people of all backgrounds have put Rinpoche’s loving guidance into practice – and have seen real and positive change in their lives. Now, with Dear Lama Zopa , you can see for yourself…

Tony! Toni! Tone! – Icon: Tony! Toni! Tone!

$9.02

In 2011, Icon replaced 20th Century Masters – The Millennium Collection as the budget-line Tony! Toni! Ton! anthology, but there are some differences between the two releases. Bizarrely, this includes neither "Baby Doll" nor "Born Not to Know" — two Top Five R&B singles from the trio's 1988 debut. In their place, there's a pair of album cuts, "Don't Fall in Love" and "My Ex-Girlfriend." Otherwise, the selections are identical, led by chart-toppers "Little Walter," "The Blues," "Feels Good," "It Never Rains (In Southern California)," and "Whatever You Want." The relatively in-depth Hits compilation from 1997 could have used an overhaul, but this was certainly better than nothing. ~ Andy Kellman

Tony Rice - Tony Rice Plays & Sings Bluegrass

Tony Rice – Tony Rice Plays & Sings Bluegrass

$15.16

Personnel: Tony Rice (vocals, guitar); Anthony Rice (vocals, guitar); Bill Emerson (tenor, baritone, banjo, background vocals); Jimmy Gaudreau, Larry Rice (tenor, mandolin, background vocals); John Duffey (tenor, mandolin); Mike Auldridge (baritone, dobro, background vocals); Sam Bush (baritone, mandolin, background vocals); Jerry Douglas (dobro); John Duffy (mandolin, background vocals); Vassar Clements (fiddle). Liner Note Author: Jack Tottle. Recording information: Bias Recording Company, Inc., Springfield, VA. Photographer: Tim Talley. Tony Rice, one of the most innovative guitarists to emerge from the "third generation" of bluegrass musicians, returns to his roots on TONY RICE PLAYS AND SINGS BLUEGRASS, his first real bluegrass album since 1977. This collection of classics, mostly from the '50s and '60s, is given an exuberant reading by Rice and his band of bluegrass veterans. Rice's lead vocals evoke the "high lonesome" sound of Bill Monroe. His guitar work is stunning in its attack, rhythmic intensity, and choice of notes–his solo on Lester Flatt's "I'll Stay Around" twists and turns, hits a few pungent blue notes, and is gone, all in eight bars, while the guitar break on "Thunderclouds of Love" explodes in a flurry of notes and slurred jazz chords. Dobro star Jerry Douglas adds his unmistakable fluid touch. Bill Emerson, a founding member of the Country Gentlemen, is on hand to play some hellified banjo and to pass the torch. Balancing respect for tradition with modern virtuosity and willingness to take risks, TONY RICE PLAYS AND SINGS BLUEGRASS is about as good as it gets.

TONY V - TONY V; A NEW MAN

TONY V – TONY V; A NEW MAN

$17.41

Not just your average Alternative Pop/Adult Contemporary music. Tony V steps us back into that era of classic 1950's and early 1960's pop with a fresh new approach. His voice is reminiscent of the sound of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Johnny Maestro and Nat King Cole yet the CD has the contemporary flare of artists like Michael Buble and Harry Conick Jr. Tony's melodies and lyrics are infectious, simple and catchy. Together with Producer/Songwriter/Musician Lisa Ratner's lush to swinging big band like arrangements, 'A New Man' combines a mix of musical styles and influences of the 40's, 50's and 60's that will get your feet tapping, fingers snapping, and hands clapping. Ratner crosses the boundaries and experiments with a fusionistic blend of jazz/blues/theatrical/pop and even some rockabilly. Anything goes on this wonderfully creative CD. You might even hear a bit of Cole Porter or Doris Day influences as well. With guest vocal appearances by Sandy Farina ( Strawberry Fields in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band -the movie), Charlie Lagond on sax (Kid Creole and the Coconuts), Aaron 'Von Cello' Minksy on acoustic guitar and strings and 12 year old prodigy Jason Bangser on electric guitar this CD sparkles with originality and charm. For those of you, young or old who appreciate and love this genre of music you will not be disappointed by this wonderful, fun and upbeat album. You might even want to get up and dance. Yes there is even a Rhumba!

Out of the Depths

With a foreword by Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel! Israel Meir Lau, one of the youngest survivors of Buchenwald, was just eight years old when the camp was liberated in 1945. Descended from a 1,000-year unbroken chain of rabbis, he grew up to become Chief Rabbi of Israel-and like many of the great rabbis, Lau is a master storyteller. Out of the Depths is his harrowing, miraculous, and inspiring account of life in one of the Nazis’ deadliest concentration camps, and how he managed to survive against all possible odds. Lau, who lost most of his family in the Holocaust, also chronicles his life after the war, including his emigration to Mandate Palestine during a period that coincides with the development of the State of Israel. The story continues up through today, with that once-lost boy of eight now a brilliant, charismatic, and world-revered figure who has visited with Popes John Paul and Benedict; the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, and countless global leaders including Ronald Reagan, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Tony Blair.

The Cowboy Boot Book

The Cowboy Boot Book

$44.08

From bikers to high-fashion models to buckaroos on the wide open range, people all over the world are wearing cowboy boots and loving them. Ever since the 1920s, when Tom Mix first surfaced as a cowboy hero, boots have gone through surges of popularity. Up till now, the highest point was about 1955, when Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and western music were embraced as icons of the American dream. Boots have always been worn by working cowboys, but now they are a fashion statement. With the wide selection of leathers (cowhide, kangaroo, snake-even armadillo, bullfrog and chicken) and colors available, a renissance of artful boot making has taken place. You can pick your boots righ off the shelf, choosing from the classic tall tops by boot factories such as Justin, Nocona, Tony Lama and Lucchese, or from the nostalgic peewees-colorful reproductions of 1930s and 1940s odels. But if you really need to let the world know exactly who you are, or if you need to express yourself or take a stand with what you stand in, author Tyler Beard advises, go to a custom bootmaker. It cost about the same as a few visits toa good therapist but it’s a lot more fun. In this book, Beard retells a lively history of the bootmaking industry and introduces today’s best bootmakers and their most artistic styles. The artful photography of Jim Arndt, combined with Beard’s easy entertaining style makes The Cowboy Boot Book a classic in western Americana.
