Tony MacAlpine - Tony Macalpine

Tony MacAlpine – Tony Macalpine

$12.1

Personnel: Tony MacAlpine (guitar, keyboards, programming).Audio Mixer: Ulrich Wild.Recording information: The Cottage, Pasadena, CA; The Wilderness.Photographer: Alex Solca.Tony MacAlpine's self-titled tenth solo album is his first such effort in a decade, that is, since 2001's Chromaticity. Of course, he's hardly been idle in that period, playing and recording with the power trio CAB and playing in Steve Vai's touring band, among other activities. But that he has returned to solo work and given this disc simply his own name indicates a re-dedication to his career as a frontman. Nevertheless, his extensive work in groups has had an impact. Here, bassist Philip Bynoe and drummer Virgil Donati make like they are a heavy metal rhythm section for the most part, and MacAlpine takes off for the stratosphere, rampaging through soaring riffs at high speed. But he doesn't leave his bandmates behind, always staying within the arrangements rather than just showboating. Back in his earlier solo days, he had finally taken to the microphone for some singing, but this is an all-instrumental effort. As in the past, however, he gives over some time to his keyboard abilities, notably plinking through some jazzy piano playing halfway through "10 Seconds to Mercury" and overdubbing himself in the minor-key piano and acoustic guitar duet that is "Flowers for Monday." He also leaves room for his classical tendencies, although this time, instead of sitting down to play a Chopin piece on piano, he instead comes up with an electric guitar arrangement for Schumann's "The Dedication" to end the album. It brings out another of his major influences for, if most would consider him in the Vai/Joe Satriani school of guitar shredders, his pop/classical tendencies suggest Queen's Brian May. ~ William Ruhlmann

Tony Terry and producer Ted Currier milked one more hit out of their urban contemporary formula here. Terry's take on "Everlasting Love" briefly made some noise, and his vocals were competent on the filler tracks. ~ Ron Wynn

Tony Fruscella - Tony Fruscella

Tony Fruscella – Tony Fruscella

$16.68

Tony Fruscella was an under-recorded cool jazz trumpeter in the Chet Baker vain, who only managed to release this lone studio date for Atlantic in March 1955. With the exception of Fruscella's playing on a few Stan Getz sessions, he could never overcome obscurity. He is backed by a great, albeit little-known horn section of Allen Eager on tenor saxophone (who played similar sounds with Gerry Mulligan), Charles Mingus' associate Danny Bank on baritone, and Chauncey Welsch on trombone. The rhythm section is rounded out by the prominently featured piano of Bill Triglia, who also played with Mingus, Bill Anthony on bass, and Junior Bradley on drums. Two standards, "I'll Be Seeing You" and "Blue Serenade," are included with seven originals. [This is one of the 50 reissues celebrating Atlantic's 50th anniversary from Rhino/Atlantic complete with original cover art, liner notes, and playing order.] ~ Al Campbell

Tony Rice - Tony Rice

Tony Rice – Tony Rice

$14.58

Personnel: Tony Rice (vocals, guitar); David Grisman, Larry Rice (tenor, mandolin, background vocals); J.D. Crowe (baritone, banjo, background vocals); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Darol Anger, Richard Greene (violin).Audio Mixers: Tony Rice; Bob Shumaker .Liner Note Author: Philip Elwood.Recording information: 1750 Arch, Berkeley, CA (07/1976).Photographer: Robert Schliefer. This eponymous release was the first of Tony Rice's many albums for the Rounder label, and hardcore bluegrass fans will probably consider it his best. Joined by an impressive roster of sidemen representing both the old and new schools of bluegrass playing (including David Grisman, J.D. Crowe, Jerry Douglas, and Darol Anger), Rice runs through a program consisting primarily of bluegrass standards but also including a number of forward-thinking modern compositions, such as David Nichtern's "Plastic Banana" and Grisman's swinging "Rattlesnake." This album is one of the early landmarks in the development of what came to be called new acoustic music, an instrumental genre that drew almost equally on bluegrass, jazz, and classical traditions and came to be championed by Rice, Grisman, Anger, and a few others in their circle. But as Rice's warm singing on "Hills of Roane County" and "Banks of the Ohio" and his fiery flatpicking on "Big Mon" and "Farewell Blues" attest, this is also a very fine straight bluegrass album. It's difficult to pick out highlights, but the joyful "Eighth of January" and the wonderful twin fiddle arrangement on "Big Mon" are both definite showstoppers. ~ Rick Anderson
