When Sir Jimmy Savile died in October 2011, he was celebrated as a prolific charity fundraiser who dedicated his time to worthy causes. But on October 3rd,2012, ITV broadcast an investigation into Savile’s behavior called Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile . In it they revealed the true, predatory, and evil man behind the popular TV persona. In the documentary, several women alleged he sexually abused them when they were underage. This sparked a flurry of allegations in the following days and weeks from other alleged victims. So far police have been called to investigate reports of abuse on young children from as long ago as 1959 and anticipate the number of victims to be in the region of 300. But how Savile was allowed to get away with such monstrous crimes for so long has been the subject of immense debate and has led to the investigations of several British institutions. The BBC has been criticized and is hosting an internal investigation into how Savile’s behavior was never called into question and how abuse allegations during his long career at the corporation failed to be flagged. An investigation is also underway into the canceling of a Newsnight program in 2011. The Department of Health has also said it will investigate its own conduct in appointing Savile to lead a “taskforce” overseeing the management of high security psychiatric hospital Broadmoor in 1998. Abuse is also alleged to have taken place at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, where Savile volunteered. This is a well researched and informative look at how a predatory pedophile was allowed to go unnoticed for so long and to breacha nation’s trust is such a cruel and evil way.

Born and developed in Norway, Uber creates sophisticated apparel that’s built to withstand the region’s bone-chilling winters and rainy summers. Staying true to Uber’s design philosophy by balancing protection with stylish appeal, the Men’s Regulator II Savile Insulated Coat combines lofty warmth and premium waterproofing within the dignified silhouette of a trench coat. It’s a highly technical piece with its Regulator membrane and fully sealed seams, providing total protection from heavy downpours, blizzards, and misty conditions alike. This waterproof membrane is fully breathable, so you won’t feel like you’re wearing a sweaty garbage bag in humid climates and wet coastal locales. 60 gram PrimaLoft insulation traps critical warmth in colder winter months, so you won’t have to shiver uncontrollably on your way into work. Uber claims this coat keeps you warm down into the lower 20s (in Fahrenheit), making it suitable for all but the coldest of winter climates. The Regulator II Savile Insulated Coat doesn’t stop there with technical innovation, impressing even the most discerning wearers with its tailored fit that does away with excess bulk and unsightly lines. For additional sturdiness, critical zones are welded for extra durability when you’re subjecting this jacket to the rigors of daily wear. Additionally, there’s a two-way YKK zipper for regulating your body temperature, as well as an Automagnetix placket that forgoes annoying buttons for the simplicity of hidden magnets.

The Rev. Jonah Dove is the son of a legendary Harlem minister, and a man troubled in both mind and spirit. He feels himself unworthy and incapable of taking up the burden of running his church from the largerthanlife figure who is his father. He is haunted both by his own, shameful history of “passing” as a white man in college, and by the prospects for his people in the harsh, new, racist age he fears the world is entering. Malcolm Little better known as Malcom X is a teenage hustler from Lansing, Michigan by way of Boston, a young man on the make, trying always to be something bigger, tougher, savvier, and more confident than he really is. On his way to New York, Malcolm happens to come to the rescue of Jonah and his wife, Amanda, when they are attacked by some drunken soldiers on the train. From then on, their paths cross repeatedly as they each go about trying to find what they really want out of the roiling, wartime city, until the moment when Harlem finally erupts around them, as a people driven beyond endurance strikes out blindly at all the forces keeping it entrapped in misery and hopelessness. Stranded on the streets of a rioting city, Jonah and Malcolm meet each other once more, as they come to grips with what they are and what the future will hold for them.

Colorful, shaggy, and unkempt, misfits and outlaws, the 1993 Phillies played hard and partied hard.Led by Darren Daulton, John Kruk, Lenny Dykstra, and Mitch Williams, it was a team the fans loved and continue to love today. Focusing on six key members of the team, Macho Row follows the remarkable season with an up-close look atthe players’ lives, the team’s triumphs and failures, and what made this group so unique and so successful. With a throwback mentality, the team adhered to baseball’s Code . Designed to preserve the moral fabric of the game, the Code’s unwritten rules of the game formed the bedrock of this diehard team whose players paid homage and respect to the game at all times. Trusting one another and avoiding ideas of superstardom, they consistently rubbed the opposition the wrong way and didn’t care. William C. Kashatus pulls back the covers on this old-school band of brothers, depicting the highs and lows and their brash style while also digging into the suspected steroid use of players on the team. Macho Row is a story of winning and losing, success and failure, and the emotional highs and lows that accompany them.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Don’t miss an original essay by John Grisham in the back of the book. John Grisham takes you back to where it all began. One of the most popular novels of our time, A Time to Kill established John Grisham as the master of the legal thriller. Now we return to Ford County as Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial that exposes a tortured history of racial tension. Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County’s most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises many more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row? Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. Murderers' Row

Murderers’ Row

Criminoloogist Robin Odell has compiled this gruesome gallery of cases from all over the world, revealing the growth in serial slayings, contract killings and middle-class murders and investigating what motivates people to commit the ultimate crime. As well as gangsters and ordinary felons, the book includes doctors, millionaries, housewives, children, lawyers, accountants, officers and gentlemen who have succumbed to the killing instinct. Behind the sensational names concocted by the tabloid press – ‘Boston Strangler’, ‘Dracula Killer’, ‘Night Stalker’, ‘Granny Killer’ – lurk real murderers committing acts of violence in circumstances often more bizarre than fiction. Arranged in an easy-to-use A-Z format, the book contains over 500 cases from serial killers such as Dennis Nilsen and Ted Bundy, to those such as Jeremy Bamber and Steven Benson who dispatched their parents for money; from murderous New Zealand teenagers whose story made a successful film, to the many doctors and nurses who took life instead of saving it; from unsolved murders such as the murder of Little Gregory in France to the paid assignments of John Waynes Hearn, a Vietnam veteran who killed to order. The result is a classic of true crime, a definitive work on murder as a worldwide phenomenon.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Just Desserts: Martha Stewart: The Unauthorized Biography comes a scrupulously researched investigative biography that tells the inside story of Anna Wintour’s incredible rise to power From her exclusive perch front row center, glamorous Vogue magazine editor in chief Anna Wintour is the most powerful and influential style-maker in the world. Behind her trademark sunglasses and under the fringe of her Louise Brooks bob she determines whether miniskirts are in or out, whether or not it’s politically correct to wear fur. She influences designers, wholesalers, and retailers globally from Seventh Avenue to the elegant fashionista enclaves of L’Avenue Montaigne and Via della Spiga. In the U.S. alone a more than $200 billion fashion industry can rise or fall on Anna Wintour’s call. And every month millions of women-and men-read Vogue , and are influenced by the pages of the chic and trendy style wish-book that she has controlled with an iron hand in a not-always-so-velvet glove since fighting her way to the most prestigious job in fashion journalism. Anna Wintour’s fashion influence extends to celebrities and politicians: because of it, Hillary Clinton underwent a drastic makeover and became the first First Lady to strike a pose on the cover of Vogue in the midst of Monicagate; Oprah Winfrey was forced to go on a strict diet before Wintour would put her on Vogue ’s cover. And beauties like Rene Zellweger and Nicole Kidman follow Anna Wintour’s fashionista rules to the letter. Now in her mid-fifties, as she nears her remarkable second decade at the helm of Vogue , comes this revealing biography that will shock and surprise both Anna’s fans and detractors alike. Based on scores of interviews, Front Row unveils the Anna Wintour even those closest to her don’t know. Oppenheimer chronicles this insecure and creative powerhouse’s climb to the top of the bitchy, competitive fashion magazine world, showing up close, as never before exposed, how she artfully crafted and reinvented herself along the way. She’s been called many things-”Nuclear Wintour,” by the British press, “cold suspicious and autocratic, a vision in skinniness,” by Grace Mirabella, the editor she dethroned at Vogue , and the “Devil” by those who believe she’s the inspiration for a recent bestselling novel written by a former assistant. Included among the startling revelations in Front Row are: * Anna’s “silver spoon” childhood spent craving time with her father. * Anna’s rebellious teen years in London, obsessed with fashion, night-clubbing and dating roguish men. * Anna’s many tempestuous romances. * Anna’s curious marriage to a brilliant child psychiatrist, her role as a mother, and the shocking scandal that led to divorce when she had an affair with a married man.

Steinbeck’s tough yet charming portrait of people on the margins of society, dependant on one another for both physical and emotional survival Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, including longtime friend Ed Ricketts, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Dora, Mack and his boys, Lee Chong, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and poignant works. In her introduction, Susan Shillinglaw shows how the novel expresses, both in style and theme, much that is essentially Steinbeck: scientific detachment, empathy toward the lonely and depressedand, at the darkest levelthe terror of isolation and nothingness. A Life in Fashion

When fashion photographer and costume designer Cecil Beaton died in 1980, it was not surprising that one of his tailors was telephoned with the news before Buckingham Palace, despite his close association with the Royal Family. From the moment he arrived at Cambridge University in 1922 wearing an evening jacket, red shoes, black-and-white trousers, and a large cravat, to his appearance nearly forty years later at Truman Capote?s Black and White Ball, Beaton expressed a flamboyant sartorial nonchalance. He had accounts with the best Savile Row tailors; he bought his shirts from Excello in New York; and his clothes from Lanz of Salzburg now reside, along with other elements of his wardrobe, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.A Life in Fashion is a lively and informative study of Beaton?s style, which kept evolving over the decades, driving and reflecting the transitions in men?s fashion that followed the Second World War. Drawing on unpublished records and interviews with Beaton?s former tailors, Benjamin Wild delightfully scrutinizes Beaton?s approach to fashion as well as his influence on designers such as Giles Deacon and Dries van Noten.
