Graham Central Station - Graham Central Station

Graham Central Station – Graham Central Station

$12.4

Graham Central Station: Larry Graham, Hershall "Happiness" Kennedy, Robert "Butch" Sam, Patryce "Chocolate" Banks, Willie "Wild" Sparks, David "Dynamite" Vega. Texas-born bassist Larry Graham changed the face of funk forever when he pioneered the thumb-slapping electric bass technique during his late-'60s tenure with Sly & the Family Stone. Subsequently, he set off on his own, starting Graham Central Station with ex-members of Hot Chocolate (of "You Sexy Thing" fame). GRAHAM CENTRAL STATION should strike a familiar chord with Sly Stone fans, as its all-in-the-family brand of greasy, progressive funk has much in common with Graham's former employer. Graham puts his thumb-popping style to good use on groove-centered tunes such as "Hair" and the Al Green R&B workout "It Ain't No Fun to Me." On "We Be's Gettin' Down," the interaction of the guitar, keyboards, and polyrhythmic percussion suggests the hazy, heady Sly of THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON. The ensemble vocals on "Tell Me What it Is" and the opener "We've Been Waiting" contribute further to the group aesthetic that was also at the heart of Sly's finest work.

Graham Nash - Graham Nash & David Crosby

Graham Nash – Graham Nash & David Crosby

$14.15

Personnel: David Crosby (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Graham Nash (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica, piano, organ, keyboards); Crosby & Nash (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Jerry Garcia (guitar, steel guitar); Danny Kortchmar, Dave Mason, David Mason , Danny Kootch (guitar); Dana Africa (flute); Arthur Maebe, David Duke , George Price (French horn, horns); Craig Doerge (piano, electric piano, organ, keyboards); Chris Ethridge (keyboards); John Barbata, Russ Kunkel, Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Liner Note Author: Claude Nobs. Recording information: Wally Heider III, Los Angeles, CA (1972). Photographer: Robert Hammer. This self-titled release is one of — if not arguably the — most impressive side project to arise from CSN. Taken beyond face value, Graham Nash/David Crosby is a direct reflection, if not an extension, of the musical and personal relationship between its co-creators. Likewise, the results remain true, enhancing rather than detracting from the very individualistic styles of Crosby and Nash. The best elements of each are readily available here, punctuated at every turn by their complicated vocal arrangements and air-lock harmonies. In the wake of the enormous successes garnered by the albums Crosby Stills & Nash, Dj Vu, and Four Way Street, the principal members were essentially given carte blanche studio access to pursue solo projects as well. This release is the first in what would turn out to be a series of collaborative efforts between Crosby and Nash. Musically it continues in much the same vein as their respective debut solo releases, If I Could Only Remember My Name and Songs for Beginners. Nash's contributions include "Girl to Be on My Mind," "Stranger's Room," and "Southbound Train" — a twangy piece of Americana featuring a high and lonesome steel guitar solo from Jerry Garcia that likewise hearkens to the Grateful Dead's American Beauty, Elton John's Tumbleweed Connection, or the Band's Music From Big Pink. These tracks co-exist in stark contrast to Crosby's more cerebral and incisive contributions, such as "Whole Cloth," "Games," and "The Wall Song." The latter features some outstanding instrumental support from the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia (guitar), Phil Lesh (bass), and Billy Kreutzman (drums). The core band revolves around another set of all-stars: Russell Kunkel (drums), Leland Skylar (bass), Craig Doerge (keyboards), and Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar (guitar). This same band would more or less continue to back up Crosby and Nash's duo efforts throughout the remainder of the '70s. Graham Nash/David Crosby offers much of the same unique songwriting and personal style which informed their better contributions not only to the CSN-related efforts, but as far back as their offerings with the Hollies and the Byrds. Interested enthusiasts are also urged to locate Another Stoney Evening — a live acoustic release from October 10, 1971 — which includes seminal live versions of "Southbound…

Graham Central Station: Larry Graham (various instruments); Hershall Kennedy, David Vega, Patryce Banks, Robert "Butch" Sam, Gaylord Birch. Personnel: Larry Graham (vocals, guitar, harpsichord, Clavinet, synthesizer, bass synthesizer, tambourine, background vocals); David Vega (vocals, guitar); Robert Sam (vocals, piano, organ, keyboards, tambourine); Hershall Kennedy (vocals, harpsichord, Clavinet, synthesizer, wind, background vocals); Gaylord Birch (vocals, drums, bass drum, cymbals, timpani, tom tom); Patryce Banks (vocals, drums, box, tambourine); Babyface (vocals); Emilio Castillo, Greg Adams, Lenny Pickett , Stephen "Doc" Kupka, Mic Gillette (horns); Butch (piano, organ, background vocals); Chocolate (background vocals). Audio Remixer: Tom Flye. Recording information: Record Plant, Sausalito, CA; Wally Heider Recording, San Francisco, CA. Photographer: Gary Heery. Arrangers: Larry Graham; Tom Salisbury. The irony to this album is that the group's music is funky as always, but its lyrical content has many gospel and religious overtones. Though the title track was not a featured release, its synth-propelled rhythm and stirring vocals blend well on this moderately uptempo number. The Top 20 single "Love" is arranged in a free-flowing, mellow tempo. It peaked at number 14 on the Billboard R&B charts. It was followed by the juiced-up funk track "Entrow." Supported by its unwavering beat, group members take turns on vocals and musical exhibitions. While "Save Me" has an aggressive disco groove, the lyric is religious as the title reflects. "I Got a Reason" and "Forever" have similar religious messages. With Larry Graham being the writer on every song on the album, it is highly likely that he was experiencing a transformation in his personal and professional life. ~ Craig Lytle

Graham Parker - Heat Treatment

Graham Parker – Heat Treatment

$13.8

This is Graham Parker's second album. HEAT TREATMENT is a 1976 album by the British pub-rock performer Graham Parker. U.K. reissue. Graham Parker And The Rumour's second album, recorded hot on the heels of their debut, HOWLIN' WIND, is the equal of its more-celebrated predecessor, and may possibly be even better. For one thing, Robert John "Mutt" Lange's typically booming production serves Parker's anthemic songs and the Rumour's balls-out playing better than Nick Lowe's muddier sound. For another, the songs are simply incredible, up there with the classic SQUEEZING OUT SPARKS. The title track, "Back Door Love," and "Hotel Chambermaid" are R&B raveups that show how much tighter the Rumour had gotten on the road. Brinsley Schwarz and Martin Belmont's guitars battle for supremacy with Bob Andrews' Garth Hudson-like organ soaring over the killer rhythm section of Andrew Bodnar and Stephen Goulding. Say what you will about the Attractions, the Rumour were clearly the best band of the era.

Graham Bonnet - Underground

Graham Bonnet – Underground

$13.74

Personnel: Graham Bonnet (vocals, background vocals); Kevin Valentine (drums). Audio Mixer: Pat Regan. Photographer: Robert John. Although he'll probably always be best known for being the shortest tenured vocalist in the history of Rainbow (only a single album, 1980's Down to Earth), Graham Bonnet has certainly carved a niche for himself as one of rock's most underrated vocalists. After all, he's also appeared on countless other releases (Michael Schenker Group, Alcatrazz, etc.), and has issued sporadic solo albums over the years. 1998 saw Bonnet issue his fourth solo set overall, Underground, which sees him return to his hard rock roots, and forgo the pop-based material he was singing toward the end of his tenure with Alcatrazz (in hopes of crossover success). As with his previous solo outings, Bonnet relies on outside songwriters to supply the tunes — including a Rainbow cover, "Lost in Hollywood," as well as such tough hard rockers as the album-opening title track and "Breakaway." But Bonnet's voice is perhaps best suited for slightly laid-back rock fare, as evidenced here by "Movin' On." Underground is certainly a return to form for Bonnet, although he does manage to break one of rock's golden rules — never attempt to cover a Jimi Hendrix song (a best forgotten cover of "The Wind Cries Mary"). Fans of the overlooked Disturbing the Peace and the aforementioned Down to Earth should enjoy Bonnet's 1998 solo outing. ~ Greg Prato

Robert Burns: The Lassies

Robert Burns: The Lassies

$14.99

During his short life Burns wrote a great deal of poetry to or about women. Some were written as love poems or songs, intended to sway the heart of whoever had caught his eye, others in honour of a more casual acquaintance whose beauty or talents had impressed him in some way. Others were composed simply as a form of thank you letter for gifts or hospitality that he may have received. Robert Burns – The Lassies is a collection of all these poems, each accompanied by a detailed history of Burns’ relationship with the subject. This is the definitive compilation of songs and poems about the women in Burns’ life. The women are: Nelly Kilpatrick, Peggy Thomson, Agnes Fleming. Robert Calvert - Hype

Robert Calvert – Hype

$13.97

Personnel: Bob Calvert (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, percussion); Trev Thoms (guitar); Michael Moorcock (12-string guitar, background vocals); Simon House, George Csapo (violin, keyboards, background vocals); Pete Pavli (cello); Nick Turner (saxophone, background vocals); Pete Dowling (drums, percussion). Liner Note Author: Graham Inglis. Arrangers: Bob Calvert; Simon House; George Csapo. Released to accompany one of the best rock novels of all time, former Hawkwind vocalist Calvert's Hype is part concept album, part soundtrack, and wholly the most underrated project Calvert was ever involved in. The novel, also titled Hype, follows the short career of Tom Mahler, a rising rock star whose career is marked by one of the most ambitious media hypes of all time — and ended by the greatest masterstroke of all, a bullet in the head on the eve of his breakthrough. The album, then, draws from Mahler's own catalog of songs, a dozen punchy, electronics-driven vignettes with titles like "Hanging out on the Seafront," "The Luminous Green Glow of the Dials of the Dashboard (At Night)," and "Lord of the Hornets," a single and the best-known track on the album, courtesy of its appearances on sundry compilation albums. Of course, all 12 are unmistakably Calvert, caught midway between the quirky pop transmutation of the late-'70s Hawkwind/Hawklords freakshow, and the dense subversive soundscapes of his own next album, Freq. The supporting cast, too, offers few surprises; Simon House, Nik Turner, and Michael Moorcock are all familiar Hawkfriends, and their accompaniment molds itself seamlessly around Calvert's characteristically vivacious lyrics. So seamlessly that Hype's overall obscurity is utterly baffling. Or maybe it isn't. It is fashionable, even among Calvert's greatest admirers, to speak glowingly only of his first two solo sets and to overlook the remainder as mere works in progress — a conspiracy aided by the unknown record labels, zero budgets, and failing health which dogged his final years. In fact, Hype is at least as striking as Lockheed and Lief — more so, in fact, when one considers that neither of those albums led anybody anywhere. Play Hype, however, and one can hear the entire course of British synth pop unfolding months before many of its own sainted progenitors themselves got started. And it doesn't even matter whether Calvert was plundered or prescient. You'll never hear Midge Ure and Ultravox in the same light again. ~ Dave Thompson

Unknown Contributor Role: John Marshall . Arrangers: Robert Gass; William Allaudin Mathieu. Robert Gass has always had an ecumenical approach to chant, choosing vocal pieces from a variety of spiritual and cultural traditions. Here he and his choir, On Wings of Song, cover two 14th century Spanish Catholic hymns, a traditional Turkish Sufi chant (that runs through the 99 names of God), a Jewish liturgical chant, Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu chants, The Lord's Prayer, and an alleluia set to Pachelbel's canon. On Wings of Song has a wholesome, Protestant sound that works best on European numbers like the medieval hymns and the canon. This is a stirring collection of spiritual music, delivered with the utmost sincerity and solemnity.

GRAHAM CRACKERS – GRAHAM CRACKERS

$17.03

As the title track to the album states, The Graham Crackers are 'Ollie! Becca! Ben! Daddy!'. The first song written for the album, 'Ollie's the King of Babies' was penned by Becca when she was only 4 years old. She wrote 'The Puppy Problem' when she was 7, as a creative book report for school. The next song was written by the four of us as we bounced on Ollie's mattress on the floor – appropriately entitled 'Bouncing on My Bed'. As we bounced & sang, we decided to become a band. The remaining songs for the album flowed quickly. We recorded the album in Daddy's basement studio in our home just north of Pittsburgh. At the time of recording Ben was 10, Becca was 8, and Ollie was 3 (Daddy was 41 if you must know). We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Lukas Graham - Lukas Graham

Lukas Graham – Lukas Graham

$13.36

Recording information: Band House Studios; Beachwood Garden Studio; Blakeslee Studio; Frostbox; Mansion Studio; Medley Studio; Vibe Factory. Lukas Graham — the funky Danish band named after its charismatic frontman — released their sophomore self-titled album in their home country in 2015. It went on to become a hit, spending nearly 20 weeks atop the Danish album charts and spawning the international hit, "7 Years." In 2016, Lukas Graham released that breakthrough — nicknamed the Blue Album — in the United States, just as "7 Years" climbed toward the top of the Billboard charts. Packed with jovial doses of soulful pop/rock that recalled the catchiest of Ed Sheeran and Maroon 5, Lukas Graham also sprinkled in Ronson-esque throwback flourishes atop the classic songcraft of Billy Joel. The album's popularity derives in part to its relatability and its frontman's passion and charm. Graham's lyrics are reflective and straightforward. He's a storyteller, providing accessible snapshots of his life embellished with upbeat and soulful backing by the band, whether it's lighthearted fare like falling for a stripper on "Strip No More" or the cautionary bro-tale "Hayo." One of his best narratives, the aforementioned "7 Years," channels Graham's grief after the passing of his father in 2012 — the same year the group began its ascent on the back of its eponymous debut — wringing a lifetime of lessons out of four wistful minutes. His parents loom large over other tracks, like the "Hard Knock Life" ode to his Christiania upbringing on "Mama Said" and the evocative "Happy Home." Although the most emotional songs could inspire tears, they somehow provide solace and end up feeling uplifting: even on the raise-your-pint closing track, "Funeral," they manage to transform a typically somber event into a cause for celebration. "Everyone I know better be wasted…Cause the way I lived, it was amazing." The unpretentious nature of the music and Graham's laid-back attitude give each song an everyman quality, presented by a youthful, wide-eyed raconteur who has just enough life experience to speak to a wide audience. On Lukas Graham, listeners are invited to party with Graham and his boys, knocking back a few drinks, talking about life, and hugging it all out with a smile. ~ Neil Z. Yeung

Graham Bonnet - Graham Bonnet

Graham Bonnet – Graham Bonnet

$17.65

After the premature breakup of the Marbles, larynx acrobat Graham Bonnet took a stab at movie stardom (landing a role in Three for All), and then returned to mount a solo career with this eponymous outing, an Australian hit distributed by Ringo Starr's label. As with his previous duo, Bonnet exclusively interprets other folks' tunes. One can't really fault any of the songwriting, as most of these numbers are dependable standards; and nothing's ever wrong with Bonnet's sterling voice. But the record definitely betrays its time. The disco-string coda on "Goodnight and Goodmorning" (from Hall & Oates' debut) screams 1970s, which doesn't diminish the entertainment value one iota. Many have recorded Bob Dylan's sturdy Joan Baez dissolution, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," but none included squawking talk-box guitar. Bonnet later released a groovy single ("Warm Ride," one of his many Bee Gees covers) and dropped another one-man bomb No Bad Habits before Ritchie Blackmore plucked him for duty in Rainbow. Much of this scarce material can be found on the Rock Singer Anthology, which is fast becoming a rarity, itself. ~ Whitney Z. Gomes

Psychologist Robert Gass and his choral group On Wings of Song occupy a unique place in the widening field of recorded chant. Where many popular Kirtan leaders and chant aficionados lean toward tribal rhythms, exotic instrumentation, and charismatic vocal improvisation, Robert Gass favors steady, soothing tempos and simple acoustic accompaniment. Although Gass and others take the occasional solo vocal turn, the sweetly blended voices of the choir remain in the foreground. Their cohesiveness models a universal harmony appropriate for this collection of healing songs. "Universal" also describes the song choices. Gass puts his own gentle spin on songs by Sandy Denny, the Who ("See Me Feel Me"), and Carly Simon, as well as some traditional songs from the yogic, Buddhist and Catholic traditions.

Recording information: Record Plant, Sausalito, CA (1978). Benny Golson is hardly the first person one would expect to co-produce a funk/soul album. In the late '50s, the Philadelphian made a name for himself in the jazz world playing tenor sax alongside the likes of Lee Morgan and Curtis Fuller in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers — and his name continues to be synonymous with hard bop. But there isn't a trace of bop to be found on My Radio Sure Sounds Good to Me, a funk/soul LP that Golson produced with Larry Graham. This record marked the first time that Graham called his band Larry Graham & Graham Central Station (as opposed to simply Graham Central Station). But despite the name change and despite Golson's presence, Radio is state-of-the-art GCS — gritty 1970s funk jams ("Pow," "Boogie Witcha, Baby," "It's the Engine in Me") are right at home with sentimental soul ballads ("Is It Love?") and gospel-influenced message songs ("Mr. Friend"). Golson handles most of the LP's horn and string arrangements, but his jazz background doesn't make its presence felt — not even in a subtle way. Graham hired Golson to co-produce an R&B project, and he did what he was paid to do. My Radio Sure Sounds Good to Me isn't GCS' most essential album, but it's a solid effort that is easily recommended to anyone with a taste for gutsy, horn-powered 1970s funk. ~ Alex Henderson

Celebrating the life and legacy of one of America’s best-known religious figures in words and photographs, this book traces the amazing journey of the lanky farm boy from Charlotte, North Carolina, who grew up to preach to more than 200 million people in stadiums and arenas around the world. Written by a journalist who covered Graham and his ministry for more than a decade, Billy Graham: A Life in Pictures chronicles the preacher’s rise, his friendship with U.S. presidents, his spectacular crusades, and his work in building a religious organization that continues with his son Franklin as its leader. It also offers a glimpse into Graham’s rich family life and how he managed to maintain his integrity while other religious personalities, despiteor perhaps because oftheir large followings, were losing theirs. The book provides a fitting tribute to one of the most important religious leaders of the 20th century, a man of unimpeachable character who influenced millions around the globe.

In the early 1800s, the western part of Orange County was more than a day's journey from the county seat of Hillsborough. Area residents petitioned for a new county, which prompted the North Carolina General Assembly to create Alamance County. Centrally located, Graham was established as its county seat. Men arrived by stagecoach, horseback, and wagon to live and work in this emerging town. Entrepreneurs provided the vision and tradesmen supplied the labor as mercantile businesses, hotels, and homes dotted the town's growing skyline. Graham became a trading center for residents of Alamance County as well as the neighboring counties of Orange, Chatham, Caswell, and Randolph. Before long, all roads led to Graham. Today, activities in the community still revolve around the court square and downtown businesses. Graham showcases the vibrant history and evolution of this unique North Carolina Piedmont town.

A Season of Knives

A Season of Knives

$16.72

In 1592, Sir Robert Carey, a handsome courtier fleeing his creditors, his father’s wrath, and the close scrutiny of his Queen, came north to Carlisle to take up his new post as Deputy Warden of the West March. The presence of his true love, the married Elizabeth Widdrington, was no mere coincidence. Before long, Sir Robert was up to his ruff in horse rustling and treason (A Famine of Horses), but he sorted that out with dispatch. Now he’s in trouble again. The rowdy Grahams plan to kidnap Elizabeth as she journeys home to her husband. While Sir Robert storms out to stop them, someone murders the man he has just sacked from his post of paymaster to the Carlisle garrison. When Sir Robert returns, he finds his servant Barnabus slung into the castle dungeon, accused of the crime, and his arch enemy Sir Richard Lowther scheming to have Carey arrested for masterminding the murder. When even faithful Sergeant Dodd is prepared to believe he did it, the courtier finds his hands full-while ruin stares him in the face-as he juggles the murder inquiry and untangles a skein of love and greed that reminds him most uncomfortably of how carefully he must conceal his love for Elizabeth. A Season of Knives, based on the real Sir Robert Carey’s tumultuous life, is not only a keenly plotted detective story, it’s an innovative police procedural and historical writing at its rousing best. The other works in this series are A Plague of Angels (Introduction by Diana Gabaldon), A Famine of Horses (Introduction by Sharon Kay Penman), and A Surfeit of Guns (Introduction by Barbara Peters). The author is at work on a fifth Sir Robert Carey.

There she witnessed history on the boil at dinners with Winston Churchill, Duff Cooper (the British ambassador and the love of her life), FDR, Greta Garbo, and many others. A year after Bill’s death in 1960, she married the renowned journalist and legendary power broker Joe Alsop. A spirited and revealing memoir by the most celebrated editor of his timeAfter editing The Columbia Review, staging plays at Cambridge, and a stint in the greeting-card department of Macy’s, Robert Gottlieb stumbled into a job at Simon and Schuster. By the time he left to run Alfred A. Knopf a dozen years later, he was the editor in chief, having discovered and edited Catch-22 and The American Way of Death, among other bestsellers. At Knopf, Gottlieb edited an astonishing list of authors, including Toni Morrison, John Cheever, Doris Lessing, John le Carr? Michael Crichton, Lauren Bacall, Katharine Graham, Robert Caro, Nora Ephron, and Bill Clinton-not to mention Bruno Bettelheim and Miss Piggy. InAvid Reader, Gottlieb writes with wit and candor about succeeding William Shawn as the editor ofThe New Yorker, and the challenges and satisfactions of running America’s preeminent magazine. Sixty years after joining Simon and Schuster, Gottlieb is still at it-editing, anthologizing, and, to his surprise, writing. But this account of a life founded upon reading is about more than the arc of a singular career-one that also includes a lifelong involvement with the world of dance. It’s about transcendent friendships and collaborations, “elective affinities” and family, psychoanalysis and Bakelite purses, the alchemical relationship between writer and editor, the glory days of publishing, and-always-the sheer exhilaration of work.

This first comprehensive biography of Jewish American writer and humorist Harry Golden (1903-1981)-author of the 1958 national best-sellerOnly in America-illuminates a remarkable life intertwined with the rise of the civil rights movement, Jewish popular culture, and the sometimes precarious position of Jews in the South and across America during the 1950s.After recounting Golden’s childhood on New York’s Lower East Side, Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett points to his stint in prison as a young man, after a widely publicized conviction for investment fraud during the Great Depression, as the root of his empathy for the underdog in any story. During World War II, the cigar-smoking, bourbon-loving raconteur landed in Charlotte, North Carolina, and founded theCarolina Israelite newspaper, which was published into the 1960s. Golden’s writings on race relations and equal rights attracted a huge popular readership. Golden used his celebrity to editorialize for civil rights as the momentous story unfolded. He charmed his way into friendships and lively correspondence with Carl Sandburg, Adlai Stevenson, Robert Kennedy, and Billy Graham, among other notable Americans, and he appeared on theTonight Show as well as other national television programs. Hartnett’s spirited chronicle captures Golden’s message of social inclusion for a new audience today.

From Robert Barnard, the internationally acclaimed Diamond Dagger-winning crime writer. Some memories are better left buried in the past. Well-known author Graham Broadbent has managed to repress one particularly dangerous memory for many years, but a trip home to a school reunion brings back the shocking reality of a desperate youthful passion. It all begins with a knock on Graham’s hotel door. His visitor is nineteen-year-old Christa, who read in the newspaper that he would be in town. She introduces herself as his long-lost daughter. His daughter? It’s true that many years ago Graham had a fling with Christa’s mother, an exquisitely alluring school actress named Peggy Somers. The dates don’t work, though. Graham maintains he was out of the country when Christa was conceived. He couldn’t be her father. He’s almost sorry that he can’t claim Christa, a lively young woman who intrigues him in a strange way. And what about Christa’s mother, the formidable Peggy, who made such an impression when she portrayed Saint Joan in the school play all those years ago? Why would she have lied to Christa about her paternity? Why name Graham as the girl’s father? Separated from his wife, at loose ends in his writing, Graham takes the fateful step of searching out Peggy. It’s a big mistake. Peggy’s life, which started with such promise, has been a major disappointment. Now it’s about to become a disaster. Peggy lies. She fabricates. She fantasizes. She is the kind of person who will destroy Graham if he lets her. As Graham finds himself drawn increasingly into the turmoil surrounding this woman and her children, he must deal with deception and, ultimately, with murder. The sins of the past return to haunt the living, and the lives of those who survive will never be the same. Writing with the piercing insight and wit for which he is renowned, Robert Barnard creates a poignant masterpiece of mystery, as thoughtful as it is e

Legendary Locals of Carmel, Indiana

Legendary Locals of Carmel, Indiana

$19.5

Early Carmel settlers Silas Moffitt and William Kinzer found the area to be abundant for hunting and the soil rich for farming. Quaker in origin, the town’s quest for importance in education was forefront and remains so today. With other dedicated leaders through a time of rapid growth in the mid-20th century, Robert Hartman and Dale Graham set the standard to make Carmel High School a respected rival in academic, sports, and extracurricular competitions. Beautiful art galleries, anchored by the Evan Lurie Building, dot the rejuvenated downtown Arts & Design District where Colonel Trester’s blacksmith shop and O.W. Nutt’s hardware store once stood. A far cry from tented summer church revivals, world-class musicians and performers now take the stage of the Palladium, an acoustically perfect and visually magnificent performing arts center. Visionary mayor James Brainard seeks a sixth term and hopes to continue on the same path of growth and renewal. The city has been voted one of America’s best places to live, and Carmel’s varied and colorful residents have been proving this since the 1830s.
