Levi Strauss
structuralism [claude levi-strauss] question! HELP?

im doing a research paper on claude levi strauss. there are 5 different sections we have to answer. i have the basics about claude and his education career, etc. and i also described structuralism but the last section asks “why is their work important” and “does it impact us today” i cant find anything on the internet about structuralism impacting us today. i dont think it does? does it?

It very much so does!

I must ask though, is the paper about structuralism or Levi-Strauss? Structuralism began more with Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics.

Structuralism changed the relation between words and the physical objects that they represent. By focusing on the signs alone and what they signify, it allows the removal of the author from the text. Levi-Strauss’s work allowed for the deconstruction of the author (reference Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault). The combination of these ideas actually allow for multiple viewpoints to be applied to a text today (i.e. a feminist perspective, a perspective from a different cultural background).

Sorry, this was really hard to explain in this method as I know this material is tricky.

Lvi-Strauss is one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century yet he is a very private and isolated figure, who has been reticent about himself. This book, first published in 1983,provides a fascinating insight into his character through a careful reading of the more speculative passages of his books and interviews. His personal existential and psychological orientation is explored through a structural analysis of Tristes Tropiques , his most personal book, and his writings on art, nature and civilization and through a consideration of his debt to Rousseau. Dr Pace examines in depth Lvi-Strauss’s critique of cultural evolutionism and his attack on the notion of world history. He assesses the political implications of Lvi-Strauss’s own interpretation of human progress through an examination of his debates with Sartre and other Marxists in the 1950s and 1960s and his subsequent movement to the right. The author’s concern throughout is to place the world-view of this great French anthropologist in the context of twentieth-century intellectuals’ struggle to come to grips with cultural relativism and the problem’ of the primitive.

Levi-Strauss on Religion

$39.95

Levi-Strauss, the ‘father of modern anthropology’, is one of the most influential thinkers of the Twentieth Century. His development of ’structuralism’ – the identification of patterns of human cognition and behaviour – greatly influenced Althusser, Lacan, Foucault and Derrida. -Levi-Strauss on Religion- presents one of the only examinations of the importance of Levi-Strauss’ thought and work to the study of religion. The book examines his methodology as well as his contributions to the study of kinship, totemism, and myth. The issues raised by Levi-Strauss’ anthropological, political and philosophical texts are placed alongside contemporary debates in religious studies and the student is introduced to the thinkers and theories that informed his writings. This book will be invaluable to students of the anthropology and phenomenology of religion.

Levi Strauss & Co. (Paperback)

Levi Strauss & Co. (Paperback)

When Bavarian immigrant Levi Strauss opened his wholesale dry goods warehouse on the San Francisco waterfront in 1853, he likely had no inkling that his business would become one of the world's largest clothing companies. Levi Strauss & Co. started with imported clothing, bedding, and notions to supply the many small stores serving the Gold Rush and the expanding American West. By 1873, he and partner Jacob Davis invented the very first blue jeans, which were soon worn by working men from Los Angeles to Laramie. Strauss parlayed his business acumen into social progress by giving back to his community and embedding a company culture committed to positively impacting society. In this spirit, the Levi Strauss Foundation was created after World War II, formalizing the philanthropic work started by Strauss himself a century earlier. All the while, the company has evolved with successive generations of family owners, expanding product lines to meet the ever-changing needs of consumers around the world.

What is the significance of Structuralism for social science? How original is Lvi-Strauss’ contribution to social theory? Is he Marxist? Though Structuralism, and its leading representative Lvi-Strauss, are central to sociology, anthropology and psychology, the complexity of his work and the obscurity of his commentators have often proved a barrier to understanding. Now for the first time, Dr Badcock provides a jargon-free assessment of Lvi-Strauss’ place in the tradition of French sociological thought particularly to predecessors such as Comte, Durkheim and Mauss discusses his relationship to Marx, Sartre, Freud and Talcott Parsons and provides a concise, non-technical account of his complex ideas on kinship, totenism and myth.

Claude Lvi-Strauss

Claude Lvi-Strauss

When Claude Lvi-Strauss passed away in 2009 at age 100, France celebrated the life and contributions of not only a preeminent anthropologist, but one of the defining intellectuals of the 20th century. Just as Freud had shaken up the antiquarian discipline of psychiatry, so had Lvi-Strauss revolutionized anthropology, transforming it from the colonial-era study of exotic tribes to one consumed with fundamental questions about the nature of humanity and civilization itself. Remarkably, there has never been a biography in English of the enigmatic Claude Lvi-Strauss. Drawing on a welter of original research and interviews with the anthropologist, Patrick Wilcken’s Claude Lvi-Strauss fills this void. In rich detail, Wilcken recreates Levi-Strauss’s peripatetic life: his groundbreaking fieldwork in some of the remotest reaches of the Amazon in the 1930s; his years as a Jew in Nazi-occupied France and an emigr in wartime New York; and his return to Paris in the late 1940s, where he clashed with Jean-Paul Sartre and fundamentally influenced fellow postwar thinkers from Jacques Lacan to Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes. It was in France that structuralism, the school of thought he founded, first took hold, creating waves far beyond the field of anthropology. In his heyday, Levi-Strauss was both a hero to contemporary intellectuals, and an international celebrity. In Claude Levi-Strauss , Wilcken gives the reader a fascinating intellectual tour of the anthropologist’s landmark works: Tristes Tropiques , his most famous book, a literary meditation on his travels and fieldwork; The Savage Mind , which showed that primitive people are driven by the same intellectual curiosities as their Western counterparts, and finally his monumental four-volume Mythologiques , a study of the universal structures of native mythology in the Americas. In the years that Lvi-Strauss published these pioneering works, Wilcken observes, tribal societies seemed to hold the answers to the most profound questions about the human mind. Following the great anthropologist from So Paulo to the Brazilian interior, and from New York to Paris, Patrick Wilcken’s Claude Lvi-Strauss is both an evocative journey and an intellectual biography of one of the 20th century’s most influential minds.

A run through the woods turned anything but typical when Levi found the one thing he never expected to find-his mate. After a week spent in family reunion hell, Levi Travis is more than ready for a little break. But who knew shifting into a snow leopard and loping around in the woods could turn into such a steamy event? When Levi encounters a cougar shifter in the woods, the attraction is so hot it threatens to shoot off sparks. Levi has fantasised about having a stronger man than him want him, and he’s sure the cougar is just such a man. Which is why Levi lets himself get caught, and the intensity of their mating is only equaled by Levi’s confusion when the man shifts back into a cougar then turns tail and runs. Lyndon Hines has been running for months. Hunted, taunted, he didn’t know what else to do-until he met a man who made him realise that some things were worth fighting for. Two shifters, each a different breed, neither knowing much about their heritage, Levi and Lyndon come together and find the strength to take on the mad man who is out to end Lyndon’s life. Reader Advisory: This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

Lacan and Levi-Strauss or The Return to Freud (1951-1957)

Lacan and Levi-Strauss are often mentioned together in reviews of French structuralist thought, but what really links their distinct projects? In this important study, Markos Zafiropoulos shows how Lacan’s famous ‘return to Freud’ was only made possible through Lacan’s reading of Levi-Strauss. Via a careful and illuminating comparison of the work of the psychoanalyst and that of the anthropologist, Zafiropoulos shows how Lacan’s theories of the symbolic function, of the power of language, of the role of the father and even of the unconscious itself owe a major debt to Levi-Strauss.Lacan and Levi-Strauss is much more than an academic study of the relations between these two thinkers: it is also a superb introduction to the work of Lacan, setting out with detail and lucidity the major concepts of his work in the 1950s.

Blue jeans are globally beloved and quintessentially American. They symbolize everything from the Old West to the hippie counter-culture; everyone from car mechanics to high-fashion models wears jeans. And no name is more associated with blue jeans than Levi Strauss & Co., the creator of this classic American garment. As a young man Levi Strauss left his home in Germany and immigrated to America. He made his way to San Francisco and by 1853 had started his company. Soon he was a leading businessman in a growing commercial city that was beginning to influence the rest of the nation. Family-centered and deeply rooted in his Jewish faith, Strauss was the hub of a wheel whose spokes reached into nearly every aspect of American culture: business, philanthropy, politics, immigration, transportation, education, and fashion. But despite creating an American icon, Levi Strauss is a mystery. Little is known about the man, and the widely circulated "facts" about his life are steeped in mythology. In this first full-length biography, Lynn Downey sets the record straight about this brilliant businessman. Strauss's life was the classic American success story, filled with lessons about craft and integrity, leadership and innovation.

A History of Philosophy: Modern Philosophy from the French Revolution to Sartre, Camus, and Levi-Strauss (Paperback)

A History of Philosophy: Modern Philosophy from the French Revolution to Sartre, Camus, and Levi-Strauss (Paperback)

$15.53

Conceived originally as a serious presentation of the development of philosophy for Catholic seminary students, Frederick Copleston's nine-volume A History Of Philosophy has journeyed far beyond the modest purpose of its author to universal acclaim as the best history of philosophy in English. Copleston, an Oxford Jesuit of immense erudition who once tangled with A. J. Ayer in a fabled debate about the existence of God and the possibility of metaphysics, knew that seminary students were fed a woefully inadequate diet of theses and proofs, and that their familiarity with most of history's great thinkers was reduced to simplistic caricatures. Copleston set out to redress the wrong by writing a complete history of Western philosophy, one crackling with incident and intellectual excitement — and one that gives full place to each thinker, presenting his thought in a beautifully rounded manner and showing his links to those who went before and to those who came after him. The result of Copleston's prodigious labors is a history of philosophy that is unlikely ever to be surpassed. Thought magazine summed up the general agreement among scholars and students alike when it reviewed Copleston's A History of Philosophy as "broad-minded and objective, comprehensive and scholarly, unified and well proportioned… We cannot recommend [it] too highly."

About the House

About the House

$62.5

The domestic unit is inseparable from its homestead, and the house, at once a physical place and a social unit, is often also a unit of production and consumption, a cult group, and even a political faction. Inspired by Levi-Strauss” suggestion that the multi-functional noble houses of Medieval Europe were simply the best-known examples of a widespread social institution, the contributors to this collection analyze house systems in Southeast Asia and South America, exploring the interrelationships among buildings, people, and ideas. They reveal some of the ways in which houses can stand for social groups and serve as images of process and order.

After the New Criticism

After the New Criticism

$46.91

This work is the first history and evaluation of contemporary American critical theory within its European philosophical contexts. In the first part, Frank Lentricchia analyzes the impact on our critical thought of Frye, Stevens, Kermode, Sartre, Poulet, Heidegger, Sussure, Barthes, Levi-Strauss, Derrida, and Foucault, among other, less central figures. In a second part, Lentricchia turns to four exemplary theorists on the American scene-Murray Krieger, E.D. Hirsch, Jr, Paul de Man, and Harold Bloom-and an analysis of their careers within the lineage established in part one. Lentricchia’s critical intention is in evidence in his sustained attack on the more or less hidden formalist premises inherited from the New Critical fathers. Even in the name of historical consciousness, he contends, contemporary theorists have often cut literature off from social and temporal processes. By so doing he believes that they have deprived literature of its relevant values and turned the teaching of both literature and theory into a rarefied activity. All along the way, with the help of such diverse thinkers as Saussure, Barthes, Foucault, Derrida, and Bloom, Lentricchia indicates a strategy by which future critical theorists may resist the mandarin attitudes of their fathers.

Architecture and the Burdens of Linearity

Architecture and the Burdens of Linearity

$71.5

In this suggestive inquiry into the operations of linearity in architectural theory and practice, Catherine Ingraham investigates the line as both a conceptual and literal force in architecture. She approaches her subject from philosophical, theoretical, practical, and historical points of view, finding the following points of convergence: architecture’s relation to property, politics, and economy; architecture’s relation to propriety and the need to keep things in line; and architecture’s relation to the proper name, human identity, object identity, and spatial location and demarcation. In this engaging discussion, Ingraham considers maps, architectural plans, the laws of geometry, systems of architectural knowledge, and mythologies of architectural origin in work by Le Corbusier, Vitruvius, Alberti, Tafuri, Derrida, Levi-Strauss, Shakespeare, Lacan, Deleuze, Rilke, and Stendhal. Entering the current complex debates about the relation between theory and practice in architecture, the author also addresses themes in psychoanalytic criticism, post-structural theory, and feminist criticism. Her examination thus moves beyond architecture and its literal structures to the notion of epistemological structure that architecture as a discipline and practice upholds and promotes.

Between the Eyes

Between the Eyes

$20.29

In an era of social confusion and visual pandemonium, David Levi Strauss tackles issues of photography and politics in a way that few critics today are courageous enough to attempt. The essays collected in Between the Eyes address topics ranging from propaganda and the imagery of dreams, to Sebasti?o Salgado’s epic social documents and the deeply personal photographic revelations of Francesca Woodman. Other issues broached here include the legitimacy of photographic imagery and the media frenzy surrounding the events of September 11, as well as essays on the work of Ania Bien, Miguel Rio Branco, Alfredo Jaar, Joel-Peter Witkin and others, plus an interview with painter Leon Golub (who worked from photographs). Reviewing the first edition of Between the Eyes, Publisher’s Weekly wrote: ‘Photography and Propaganda, ‘ a study of the work and deaths in ’80s Central America of photojournalists Richard Cross and John Hoagland, should be required reading in the age of embeddedness, and ‘Photography and Belief’ is a terrific meditation on truth in the age of digital manipulation.

Claude Levi-Strauss

Claude Levi-Strauss

$42.94

In this lucide guide to the often abstruse works of Claude Levi-Strauss, Edmund Leach synthesizes the thought of one of the twentieth century’s greatest anthropologists and provides a thoughtful introduction to the theory and practice of structuralism. Leach organizes his work not by chronology but by theme, exploring three important topics in Levi-Strauss’s work: human beings and their symbols, the structure of myth, and kinship theory. Written concisely and with great care and penetration, this brief book is both a fine introduction for the uninitiated reader of Levi-Strauss and a critical analysis that will prove valuable to those more familiar with the anthropologist’s work.

Dialectic Of Nihilism

Dialectic Of Nihilism

$60.32

This book fundamentally challenges the radical credentials of post-structuralism. Though Derrida, Foucault and Deleuze claim to have “deconstructed” metaphysics, their work has much in common with previous attempts to “end” the metaphysical tradition, from Kant to Nietzshe and Heidegger, and by sociology in general. Gillian Rose shows that this anti-metaphysical writing always appears in historically specific jurisprudential terms, which themselves found and recapitulate metaphysical categories. She reconsiders post-structuralism in this light and assesses the relationship between deconstruction and the earlier structuralism of Saussure and Levi-Strauss. She argues in conclusion that the choice between post-structuralist nihilism and Hegelian and Marxist dialectic is spurious.

Erotism

Erotism

$18.15

Taboo and sacrifice, transgression and language, death and sensuality-Georges Bataille pursues these themes with an original, often startling perspective. He challenges any single discourse on the erotic. The scope of his inquiry ranges from Emily Bronte to Sade, from St. Therese to Claude Levi-Strauss and Dr. Kinsey; and the subjects he covers include prostitution, mythical ecstasy, cruelty, and organized war. Investigating desire prior to and extending beyond the realm of sexuality, he argues that eroticism is a psychological quest not alien to death.

From Mud to Jug

From Mud to Jug

$27.83

John Michael Vlach called Brothers in Clay? not only the best study of American stoneware pottery now available but also a fine model for the presentation and analysis of hand-based technologies. The anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss noted, ?Mr. Burrison has brought to this undertaking a sensitivity, a finesse, and a flair for description and analysis that entitle the book to a place among the classics of this type. From Mud to Jug?both a companion and sequel to Brothers in Clay?deepens and enriches Burrison?s earlier study by focusing on the northeast corner of Georgia, which has maintained a continuous tradition of pottery making since the early nineteenth century. Through interviews, a census of active potters trained at the centers of Cleveland (White County) and Gillsville (Hall County), and more than one hundred color photographs of pots, potters, and their work spaces, Burrison captures the living tradition of one of the last areas of the United States where Euro-American folk pottery is still being made. The book also explores the roots and historical development of north Georgia?s stoneware tradition and includes rare historic photos that have not been previously published. The Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia, which opened in 2006 at Sautee Nacoochee Center in White County, is also acknowledged and described.

Laid out in strict chronological order, it contains unusually ample commentary on the composer’s sources of inspiration, including discussions of the composers Hermann Schroeder, Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Schaeffer, Herbert Eimert, John Cage, the information scientist Werner Meyer-Eppler, and structural anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss. Each of Stockhausen’s compositions is treated on its own terms, and also as a piece in a larger puzzle, embracing surrealist art and literature as well as music. Social Theory

Social Theory

$98.63

The second edition of this remarkably lucid text, provides a wide-ranging historical introduction to social theory. The new edition preserves, and further enhances, the book’s striking qualities – its clarity, reliability, comprehensiveness and scholarship. The theorists treated include Montesquieu, Adam Smith and the Scottish Enlightenment, Hegel, Marx, Tocqueville, Maistre, Gobineau, Darwin, Spencer, Kautsky, Nietzsche, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Freud, Lukacs, Gramsci, Heidegger, Keynes, Hayek, Parsons, the Frankfurt School, Levi-Strauss, Althusser, Foucault, Habermas, Bourdieu, Beck, and Giddens. Callinicos examines the ways in which social theory grew out of the eighteenth century Enlightenment, a time when societies emerging in the West ceased to invoke the authority of tradition to validate themselves, instead looking to scientific knowledge to justify their mastery of the world. He traces social theory’s connections with central themes in modern philosophy, with the development of political economy, and with the impact of evolutionary biology on social thought. The book has been carefully updated to ensure that it engages with the most up-to-date debates in social theory, and concludes with a substantial new chapter. Here Callinicos assesses the significance of contemporary debates about globalization, including the recent re-emergence of critiques of capitalism and imperialism in the work of Michael Hardt, Toni Negri, Luc Boltanski, Eve Chiapello, David Harvey, Robert Brenner, Giovanni Arrighi, and Slavoj Zizek. This updated version of a widely praised text will be essential reading for students of politics, sociology and social and political thought.
