Levi Strauss
structuralism [claude levi-strauss] question! HELP?

im doing a research paper on claude levi strauss. there are 5 different sections we have to answer. i have the basics about claude and his education career, etc. and i also described structuralism but the last section asks “why is their work important” and “does it impact us today” i cant find anything on the internet about structuralism impacting us today. i dont think it does? does it?

It very much so does!

I must ask though, is the paper about structuralism or Levi-Strauss? Structuralism began more with Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics.

Structuralism changed the relation between words and the physical objects that they represent. By focusing on the signs alone and what they signify, it allows the removal of the author from the text. Levi-Strauss’s work allowed for the deconstruction of the author (reference Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault). The combination of these ideas actually allow for multiple viewpoints to be applied to a text today (i.e. a feminist perspective, a perspective from a different cultural background).

Sorry, this was really hard to explain in this method as I know this material is tricky.

Levi-Strauss on Religion

Levi-Strauss, the ‘father of modern anthropology’, is one of the most influential thinkers of the Twentieth Century. His development of ’structuralism’ – the identification of patterns of human cognition and behaviour – greatly influenced Althusser, Lacan, Foucault and Derrida. -Levi-Strauss on Religion- presents one of the only examinations of the importance of Levi-Strauss’ thought and work to the study of religion. The book examines his methodology as well as his contributions to the study of kinship, totemism, and myth. The issues raised by Levi-Strauss’ anthropological, political and philosophical texts are placed alongside contemporary debates in religious studies and the student is introduced to the thinkers and theories that informed his writings. This book will be invaluable to students of the anthropology and phenomenology of religion.

What is the significance of Structuralism for social science? How original is Lvi-Strauss’ contribution to social theory? Is he Marxist? Though Structuralism, and its leading representative Lvi-Strauss, are central to sociology, anthropology and psychology, the complexity of his work and the obscurity of his commentators have often proved a barrier to understanding. Now for the first time, Dr Badcock provides a jargon-free assessment of Lvi-Strauss’ place in the tradition of French sociological thought particularly to predecessors such as Comte, Durkheim and Mauss discusses his relationship to Marx, Sartre, Freud and Talcott Parsons and provides a concise, non-technical account of his complex ideas on kinship, totenism and myth.

When Claude Lvi-Strauss passed away in 2009 at age 100, France celebrated the life and contributions of not only a preeminent anthropologist, but one of the defining intellectuals of the 20th century. Just as Freud had shaken up the antiquarian discipline of psychiatry, so had Lvi-Strauss revolutionized anthropology, transforming it from the colonial-era study of exotic tribes to one consumed with fundamental questions about the nature of humanity and civilization itself. Remarkably, there has never been a biography in English of the enigmatic Claude Lvi-Strauss. Drawing on a welter of original research and interviews with the anthropologist, Patrick Wilcken’s Claude Lvi-Strauss fills this void. In rich detail, Wilcken recreates Levi-Strauss’s peripatetic life: his groundbreaking fieldwork in some of the remotest reaches of the Amazon in the 1930s; his years as a Jew in Nazi-occupied France and an emigr in wartime New York; and his return to Paris in the late 1940s, where he clashed with Jean-Paul Sartre and fundamentally influenced fellow postwar thinkers from Jacques Lacan to Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes. It was in France that structuralism, the school of thought he founded, first took hold, creating waves far beyond the field of anthropology. In his heyday, Levi-Strauss was both a hero to contemporary intellectuals, and an international celebrity. In Claude Levi-Strauss , Wilcken gives the reader a fascinating intellectual tour of the anthropologist’s landmark works: Tristes Tropiques , his most famous book, a literary meditation on his travels and fieldwork; The Savage Mind , which showed that primitive people are driven by the same intellectual curiosities as their Western counterparts, and finally his monumental four-volume Mythologiques , a study of the universal structures of native mythology in the Americas. In the years that Lvi-Strauss published these pioneering works, Wilcken observes, tribal societies seemed to hold the answers to the most profound questions about the human mind. Following the great anthropologist from So Paulo to the Brazilian interior, and from New York to Paris, Patrick Wilcken’s Claude Lvi-Strauss is both an evocative journey and an intellectual biography of one of the 20th century’s most influential minds.

Lacan and Levi-Strauss or The Return to Freud (1951-1957)

$26.99

Lacan and Levi-Strauss are often mentioned together in reviews of French structuralist thought, but what really links their distinct projects? In this important study, Markos Zafiropoulos shows how Lacan’s famous ‘return to Freud’ was only made possible through Lacan’s reading of Levi-Strauss. Via a careful and illuminating comparison of the work of the psychoanalyst and that of the anthropologist, Zafiropoulos shows how Lacan’s theories of the symbolic function, of the power of language, of the role of the father and even of the unconscious itself owe a major debt to Levi-Strauss.Lacan and Levi-Strauss is much more than an academic study of the relations between these two thinkers: it is also a superb introduction to the work of Lacan, setting out with detail and lucidity the major concepts of his work in the 1950s.

Norman Del Mar (1919-1994) was universally recognised as a leading authority on the music of Richard Strauss, and his masterly three-volume study of his life and works remains a classic. Volume I deals with the years from the composer’s birth (1864) to Der Rosenkavalier (1912), discussing the early orchestral and chamber music, the tone poems and the operas Guntram, Feuersnot, Salome and Elektra . ‘Deploying a well-nigh encyclopaedic knowledge, Mr Del Mar acquits himself brilliantly of his task of disentangling and reassembling the numerous strands that make up the backcloth of poetry and philosophy which Strauss, while not always understanding every intricacy, yet needed as a constant reference map for his composing. The three volumes of this magnificent book should be studied by all lovers of the late-romantic music, amateurs and professionals alike…a monumental achievement.’ Times Literary Supplement ‘A brilliant and copiously analytical study … a constant fascination.’ Guardian

The Richard Strauss Companion

$86

Featuring ten new essays on different aspects of the compositions, artistic influences, and persona of Richard Strauss, The Strauss Companion explores the composer’s relationship to his own work and to that of his noted contemporaries. Guided by not only musical interests but literary, political, and philosophical ones as well, Strauss is an ideal candidate for this sort of treatment. Following this discussion of his influences, the volume moves to a discussion of the works themselves, including operas, tone poems, and stage works; these compositions are explored analytically and also in terms of their critical reception. The final chapter investigates for the first time Strauss’s much-neglected choral works, revealing their rich musical and vocal capacities, while a select bibliography and complete works-list round out the volume. These colorful and intriguing essays are written by some of the foremost American, German, British, and Canadian Strauss scholars of our time, making it an important resource for students not only of Strauss’s work, but of all musical composition and art music.

Mahler and Strauss

A rare case among history’s great music contemporaries, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) and Richard Strauss (1864-1949) enjoyed a close friendship until Mahler’s death in 1911. Unlike similar musical pairs (Bach and Handel, Haydn and Mozart, Schoenberg and Stravinsky), these two composers may have disagreed on the matters of musical taste and social comportment, but deeply respected one another’s artistic talents, freely exchanging advice from the earliest days of professional apprenticeship through the security and aggravations of artistic fame. Using a wealth of documentary material, this book reconstructs the 24-year relationship between Mahler and Strauss through collage”a meaning that arises from fragments,” to borrow Adorno’s characterization of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. Fourteen different topics, all of central importance to the life and work of the two composers, provide distinct vantage points from which to view both the professional and personal relationships. Some address musical concerns: Wagnerism, program music, intertextuality, and the craft of conducting. Others treat the connection of music to related disciplines (philosophy, literature), or to matters relevant to artists in general (autobiography, irony). And the most intimate dimensions of lifechildhood, marriage, personal characterare the most extensively and colorfully documented, offering an abundance of comparative material. This integrated look at Mahler and Strauss discloses provocative revelations about the two greatest western composers at the turn of the 20th century.
