Levi Strauss
structuralism [claude levi-strauss] question! HELP?

im doing a research paper on claude levi strauss. there are 5 different sections we have to answer. i have the basics about claude and his education career, etc. and i also described structuralism but the last section asks “why is their work important” and “does it impact us today” i cant find anything on the internet about structuralism impacting us today. i dont think it does? does it?

It very much so does!

I must ask though, is the paper about structuralism or Levi-Strauss? Structuralism began more with Ferdinand de Saussure’s Course in General Linguistics.

Structuralism changed the relation between words and the physical objects that they represent. By focusing on the signs alone and what they signify, it allows the removal of the author from the text. Levi-Strauss’s work allowed for the deconstruction of the author (reference Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault). The combination of these ideas actually allow for multiple viewpoints to be applied to a text today (i.e. a feminist perspective, a perspective from a different cultural background).

Sorry, this was really hard to explain in this method as I know this material is tricky.

Levi-Strauss on Religion

$39.95

Levi-Strauss, the ‘father of modern anthropology’, is one of the most influential thinkers of the Twentieth Century. His development of ’structuralism’ – the identification of patterns of human cognition and behaviour – greatly influenced Althusser, Lacan, Foucault and Derrida. -Levi-Strauss on Religion- presents one of the only examinations of the importance of Levi-Strauss’ thought and work to the study of religion. The book examines his methodology as well as his contributions to the study of kinship, totemism, and myth. The issues raised by Levi-Strauss’ anthropological, political and philosophical texts are placed alongside contemporary debates in religious studies and the student is introduced to the thinkers and theories that informed his writings. This book will be invaluable to students of the anthropology and phenomenology of religion.

What is the significance of Structuralism for social science? How original is Lvi-Strauss’ contribution to social theory? Is he Marxist? Though Structuralism, and its leading representative Lvi-Strauss, are central to sociology, anthropology and psychology, the complexity of his work and the obscurity of his commentators have often proved a barrier to understanding. Now for the first time, Dr Badcock provides a jargon-free assessment of Lvi-Strauss’ place in the tradition of French sociological thought particularly to predecessors such as Comte, Durkheim and Mauss discusses his relationship to Marx, Sartre, Freud and Talcott Parsons and provides a concise, non-technical account of his complex ideas on kinship, totenism and myth.

Claude Lvi-Strauss

When Claude Lvi-Strauss passed away in 2009 at age 100, France celebrated the life and contributions of not only a preeminent anthropologist, but one of the defining intellectuals of the 20th century. Just as Freud had shaken up the antiquarian discipline of psychiatry, so had Lvi-Strauss revolutionized anthropology, transforming it from the colonial-era study of exotic tribes to one consumed with fundamental questions about the nature of humanity and civilization itself. Remarkably, there has never been a biography in English of the enigmatic Claude Lvi-Strauss. Drawing on a welter of original research and interviews with the anthropologist, Patrick Wilcken’s Claude Lvi-Strauss fills this void. In rich detail, Wilcken recreates Levi-Strauss’s peripatetic life: his groundbreaking fieldwork in some of the remotest reaches of the Amazon in the 1930s; his years as a Jew in Nazi-occupied France and an emigr in wartime New York; and his return to Paris in the late 1940s, where he clashed with Jean-Paul Sartre and fundamentally influenced fellow postwar thinkers from Jacques Lacan to Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes. It was in France that structuralism, the school of thought he founded, first took hold, creating waves far beyond the field of anthropology. In his heyday, Levi-Strauss was both a hero to contemporary intellectuals, and an international celebrity. In Claude Levi-Strauss , Wilcken gives the reader a fascinating intellectual tour of the anthropologist’s landmark works: Tristes Tropiques , his most famous book, a literary meditation on his travels and fieldwork; The Savage Mind , which showed that primitive people are driven by the same intellectual curiosities as their Western counterparts, and finally his monumental four-volume Mythologiques , a study of the universal structures of native mythology in the Americas. In the years that Lvi-Strauss published these pioneering works, Wilcken observes, tribal societies seemed to hold the answers to the most profound questions about the human mind. Following the great anthropologist from So Paulo to the Brazilian interior, and from New York to Paris, Patrick Wilcken’s Claude Lvi-Strauss is both an evocative journey and an intellectual biography of one of the 20th century’s most influential minds.

Lacan and Levi-strauss or Freud's Return 1951-1957 (Paperback)

$39.63

Lacan and Levi-Strauss are often mentioned together in reviews of French structuralist thought, but what really links their distinct projects? In this important study, Markos Zafiropoulos shows how Lacan's famous 'return to Freud' was only made possible through Lacan's reading of Levi-Strauss. Via a careful and illuminating comparison of the work of the psychoanalyst and that of the anthropologist, Zafiropoulos shows how Lacan's theories of the symbolic function, of the power of language, of the role of the father and even of the unconscious itself owe a major debt to Levi-Strauss. Lacan and Levi-Strauss is much more than an academic study of the relations between these two thinkers: it is also a superb introduction to the work of Lacan, setting out with detail and lucidity the major concepts of his work in the 1950s.

Blue jeans are globally beloved and quintessentially American. They symbolize everything from the Old West to the hippie counter-culture; everyone from car mechanics to high-fashion models wears jeans. And no name is more associated with blue jeans than Levi Strauss & Co., the creator of this classic American garment. As a young man Levi Strauss left his home in Germany and immigrated to America. He made his way to San Francisco and by 1853 had started his company. Soon he was a leading businessman in a growing commercial city that was beginning to influence the rest of the nation. Family-centered and deeply rooted in his Jewish faith, Strauss was the hub of a wheel whose spokes reached into nearly every aspect of American culture: business, philanthropy, politics, immigration, transportation, education, and fashion. But despite creating an American icon, Levi Strauss is a mystery. Little is known about the man, and the widely circulated "facts" about his life are steeped in mythology. In this first full-length biography, Lynn Downey sets the record straight about this brilliant businessman. Strauss's life was the classic American success story, filled with lessons about craft and integrity, leadership and innovation.

A run through the woods turned anything but typical when Levi found the one thing he never expected to find-his mate. After a week spent in family reunion hell, Levi Travis is more than ready for a little break. But who knew shifting into a snow leopard and loping around in the woods could turn into such a steamy event? When Levi encounters a cougar shifter in the woods, the attraction is so hot it threatens to shoot off sparks. Levi has fantasised about having a stronger man than him want him, and he’s sure the cougar is just such a man. Which is why Levi lets himself get caught, and the intensity of their mating is only equaled by Levi’s confusion when the man shifts back into a cougar then turns tail and runs. Lyndon Hines has been running for months. Hunted, taunted, he didn’t know what else to do-until he met a man who made him realise that some things were worth fighting for. Two shifters, each a different breed, neither knowing much about their heritage, Levi and Lyndon come together and find the strength to take on the mad man who is out to end Lyndon’s life. Reader Advisory: This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

The Richard Strauss Companion

The Richard Strauss Companion

$138

Featuring ten new essays on different aspects of the compositions, artistic influences, and persona of Richard Strauss, The Strauss Companion explores the composer’s relationship to his own work and to that of his noted contemporaries. Guided by not only musical interests but literary, political, and philosophical ones as well, Strauss is an ideal candidate for this sort of treatment. Following this discussion of his influences, the volume moves to a discussion of the works themselves, including operas, tone poems, and stage works; these compositions are explored analytically and also in terms of their critical reception. The final chapter investigates for the first time Strauss’s much-neglected choral works, revealing their rich musical and vocal capacities, while a select bibliography and complete works-list round out the volume. These colorful and intriguing essays are written by some of the foremost American, German, British, and Canadian Strauss scholars of our time, making it an important resource for students not only of Strauss’s work, but of all musical composition and art music.

About the House

About the House

$62.5

The domestic unit is inseparable from its homestead, and the house, at once a physical place and a social unit, is often also a unit of production and consumption, a cult group, and even a political faction. Inspired by Levi-Strauss” suggestion that the multi-functional noble houses of Medieval Europe were simply the best-known examples of a widespread social institution, the contributors to this collection analyze house systems in Southeast Asia and South America, exploring the interrelationships among buildings, people, and ideas. They reveal some of the ways in which houses can stand for social groups and serve as images of process and order.

Denim

Denim

$38.21

Denim is one of the world?s favorite fabrics, and today it accounts for the largest segment of the clothing industry. The market for jeans alone is worth over 55 billion dollars. Experiments with denim by designers have helped to develop a vast vocabulary of denim styles beyond jeans that are now ingrained in fashion?s lexicon. This handsome book explores the multifaceted history of denim and examines the continually evolving relationship between it and high fashion. Prized for its durability and strength, denim began as an ideal fabric for workwear, most famously in the clothing produced by Levi Strauss & Co. for fortune hunters during the 19th-century California gold rush. Over the past 160 years, however, film, television, and advertising have helped transform denim into a symbol of youth, rebellion, sex, and the ever-ephemeral quality of? cool. The fashion industry has also played a large role in the expansion of denim into casual and couture clothing. The Denim Council, which formed in the U.S. in the 1950s, promoted denim to an ever-widening circle of customers through the framework of the fashion industry, most notably with presentations during New York fashion weeks. Featuring previously unpublished archival material from the Denim Council, an insightful text, and copious illustrations, this book offers a new perspective on denim?s rapid rise from the 19th century to today.

Dialectic Of Nihilism

Dialectic Of Nihilism

$60.32

This book fundamentally challenges the radical credentials of post-structuralism. Though Derrida, Foucault and Deleuze claim to have “deconstructed” metaphysics, their work has much in common with previous attempts to “end” the metaphysical tradition, from Kant to Nietzshe and Heidegger, and by sociology in general. Gillian Rose shows that this anti-metaphysical writing always appears in historically specific jurisprudential terms, which themselves found and recapitulate metaphysical categories. She reconsiders post-structuralism in this light and assesses the relationship between deconstruction and the earlier structuralism of Saussure and Levi-Strauss. She argues in conclusion that the choice between post-structuralist nihilism and Hegelian and Marxist dialectic is spurious.

Social Theory

Social Theory

$98.63

The second edition of this remarkably lucid text, provides a wide-ranging historical introduction to social theory. The new edition preserves, and further enhances, the book’s striking qualities – its clarity, reliability, comprehensiveness and scholarship. The theorists treated include Montesquieu, Adam Smith and the Scottish Enlightenment, Hegel, Marx, Tocqueville, Maistre, Gobineau, Darwin, Spencer, Kautsky, Nietzsche, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Freud, Lukacs, Gramsci, Heidegger, Keynes, Hayek, Parsons, the Frankfurt School, Levi-Strauss, Althusser, Foucault, Habermas, Bourdieu, Beck, and Giddens. Callinicos examines the ways in which social theory grew out of the eighteenth century Enlightenment, a time when societies emerging in the West ceased to invoke the authority of tradition to validate themselves, instead looking to scientific knowledge to justify their mastery of the world. He traces social theory’s connections with central themes in modern philosophy, with the development of political economy, and with the impact of evolutionary biology on social thought. The book has been carefully updated to ensure that it engages with the most up-to-date debates in social theory, and concludes with a substantial new chapter. Here Callinicos assesses the significance of contemporary debates about globalization, including the recent re-emergence of critiques of capitalism and imperialism in the work of Michael Hardt, Toni Negri, Luc Boltanski, Eve Chiapello, David Harvey, Robert Brenner, Giovanni Arrighi, and Slavoj Zizek. This updated version of a widely praised text will be essential reading for students of politics, sociology and social and political thought.

The Naked Man

The Naked Man

$57.62

The Naked Man is the fourth and final volume [of Mythologiques], written by the most influential and probably the most controversial anthropologist of our time. . Myths from North and South America are set side by side to show their transformations: in passing from person to person and place to place, a myth can change its content and yet retain its structural principles. . Apart from the complicated transformations discovered and the fascinating constructions placed on these, the stories themselves provide a feast-Betty Abel, Contemporary Review Levi-Strauss uses the structural method he developed to analyze and ‘decode’ the mythology of native North Americans, focusing on the area west of the Rockies. . [The author] takes the opportunity to refute arguments against his method; his chapter ‘Finale’ is a defense of structural analysis as well as the closing statement of this four-volume opus which started with an ‘Ouverture’ in The Raw and the Cooked-Library Journal The culmination of one of the major intellectual feats of our time-Paul Stuewe, Quill and Quire

The past quarter of a century has seen dramatic developments in social and political thought. These essays offer an indispensable introduction to some of the most influential amongst them. The essays themselves discuss major figures such as Gadamer, Derrida, Foucault, Habermas, Althusser and Levi-Strauss, giving valuably lucid introductory studies of some difficult but unquestionably major thinkers of our time. Uncivil War

Uncivil War

$37.95

Uncivil War is a provocative study of the intellectuals who confronted the loss of France’s most prized overseas possession: colonial Algeria. Tracing the intellectual history of one of the most violent and pivotal wars of European decolonization, James D. Le Sueur illustrates how key figures such as Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Germaine Tillion, Jacques Soustelle, Raymond Aron, Claude Levi-Strauss, Albert Memmi, Frantz Fanon, Mouloud Feraoun, Jean Amrouche, and Pierre Bourdieu agonized over the Algerian question. As Le Sueur argues, these individuals and others forged new notions of the nation and nationalism, giving rise to a politics of identity that continues to influence debate around the world. This edition features an important new chapter on the intellectual responses to the recent torture debates in France, the civil war in Algeria, and terrorism since September 11.

Workplace by Design

Workplace by Design

$35.3

Space is an organization’s second most valuable resource, yet little attention is paid to how it supports the new ways of working or the high-performance business strategies driving corporations today. In Workplace by Design, Franklin Becker and Fritz Steele address the missing link for a successfully reengineered organization: the reengineered office. With graphic illustrations and examples from Levi Strauss, Chrysler Corporation, Steelcase, Chiat/Day and others, the authors show how to plan, design, and manage a total workplace in which space is a tool for achieving business goals, not a drain on profits. They demonstrate how managers, executives, human resource specialists, and design consultants can keep the physical work setting from undermining the success of workplace initiatives – such as teamwork, telecommuting, and cross-functional collaboration – that encourages high performance. Workplace by Design illustrates how companies have treated effective alternative workplace strategies and successfully put aside conventionally awkward notions of space – based on hierarchy and status – that separate teammates, pit departments against each other in turf wars, and tie up company cash. The book shows, for example, how Aetna Life and Casualty adapts to department reorganizations by utilizing one-size-fits-all workstations with furniture tailored to different functions; how IBM enhances productivity by equipping salespeople with home fax machines and laptop computers that keep them connected to their customers; how Apple Computer stimulates the creativity of its research and development team with informal and lively break areas. Workplace by Design shows how diverse companies haveimplemented total workplace strategy to effectively involve designers, consultants and internal staff in diagnosing and solving space problems.
